When Erik Spoelstra was asked in December about his involvement in the organization’s draft evaluation process, the Heat coach immediately shot down the question… That connection led Pfund to hire Kammerer as the Heat’s West Coast scout in 1996. But Kammerer was better known as a coach at the time, as he spent 27 years as a college basketball head coach — 10 years at Grace (Ind.) College and then 17 years at Westmont College — before becoming an assistant coach at the NBA level. more

Westmont Men Stumble at Vanguard

Shooting just 38.5 percent from the field, NAIA No. 16 Westmont fell to the Lions of Vanguard by a score of 87-72 in a GSAC men’s basketball game on  Tuesday in Costa Mesa… The Warriors (22-6, 10-5 GSAC) made just 25 of 65 shots.Vanguard shot 58.8 percent (30 of 51) from the floor, including 38.5 percent (5 of 13) from three-point range. The Warriors made just 18.5 percent from beyond the arc (5 of 27). more

Travis Vander Molen belted his first home run of the season and drove in two runs for the Westmont baseball team on Monday, but it wasn’t enough for the Warriors, who lost their first game of the season to British Columbia, 8-7, on Monday at Russ Carr Field. more

Westmont Suffers First Baseball Loss of Season

Westmont surrendered three home runs and suffered its first loss of the season, 9-7 against the Thunderbirds of British Columbia (10-1). British Columbia hit a pair of two-run homers and a three-run blast to overcome a 5-0 Westmont lead. more

Blood Wedding

The Westmont College Festival Theatre presents Blood Wedding, a tragedy written by Federico García Lorca, one of Spain’s popular and controversial dramatists. The play takes place on February 24-25 and March 2-4 at 7:30 p.m. in Westmont’s Porter Theatre (955 La Paz Rd.). more

How the World Fighting Federation channels aggression into events

Sports always have been a passion for Brandy Pierce and Thom Ortiz.

Growing up in Scottsdale, Pierce ran track and cross country at Phoenix College and at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, while Ortiz was a conference champion wrestler at Arizona State University.

Ortiz, a Tucson native, recently was inducted into the ASU Hall of Fame as well as the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame.

The two married in 2009, with Ortiz serving as head coach of the ASU wrestling team and Pierce working … in Scottsdale, Pierce ran track and cross country at Phoenix College and at Westmont … more

Storm Closes Highways In and Around Santa Barbara County

Mudslides, flooding and fallen trees caused dozens of road closures throughout Santa Barbara County Friday, and major highways were shut down within a few hours of the heavy rain hitting the Central Coast… Highway 192 was closed Saturday between Coyote Road to Westmont Road because of downed trees and power lines and was expected to stay closed all day, according to Caltrans.  more
