Entrepreneur opening doors for students: Mounds View grad started nonprofit foundation while still in colleg

Shoreview native Josh Collins, a 2003 graduate of Mounds View High School, is not like most 24-year-olds. Collins remembers the day he “stumbled” into the idea of creating SVF. He was in the process of earning his bachelor’s degree from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif., from which he graduated Cum Laude with a triple major in economics and business, communication studies, and social science. more

First wins come with exclamation points

On the college cross-country front, Westmont’s Russell Smelley was at Harry’s to talk about both of his Warrior teams. Both the men’s and women’s teams are historically in the top 10 of NAIA national meet competitors, and have committed to be a balanced team that works in groups instead of as individuals. Both squads should be in the top 20 by the end of the week. more

Westmont College Recruits New IT Administrator

As new vice president of institutional technology and CIO, Reed Sheard has been appointed to oversee Westmont College’s information systems, effective Oct. 1. He comes from Spring Arbor University in Michigan, where he served as vice president for technology services for five years. more

Golf and Disc Tourney in honor of Mr. Wiersma, a Westmont graduate, who was killed in an automobile accident in 2006 while returning from an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament in Phoenix. more

Farr seeks key post on Santa Barbara Co. board

Doreen Farr says she’s a Democratic environmentalist and a seasoned business owner. The former Santa Barbara County Planning Commission chairwoman is the frontrunner for the hotly contested 3rd District seat on the board of supervisors. She has been a Westmont College financial-aid counselor and a City of Goleta, planning consultant. more

Golf and disc golf will be playing side-by-side to benefit the William Wiersma Memorial Scholarship Fund at Westmont College. The “Don’t Just Innovate. Collaborate! Tournament” will be held on Oct. 6 at the Montecito Country Club. “This best ball-best disc tournament is an innovative one that puts traditional golfers and disc golfers on the same course at the same time,” said Tom Wiersma. ” more

Rio schools welcome new principals

The Rio School District started the 2008-09 school year with two new principals and one new assistant principal. David Baldwin has taken over as principal at Rio Vista Elementary School. Baldwin received a master’s degree in counseling and guidance from California Lutheran University and a bachelor’s degree from Westmont College. more

Three Reasons to Dig Poetry at the S.B. Poetry Series at CAF

Now in its 11th year, the Santa Barbara Poetry Series regularly hosts readings by area poets and visiting ones, both those whose work has received national recognition and those who are just getting started. Paul Willis has taught at Westmont for 20 years, but only recently published his first collection of poems, Visiting Home. more

Kokkonen vs. Capps: Longtime 23rd District Congressmember Faces Challenge from North

To say Republican Matt Kokkonen is a long shot in his quest to unseat Lois Capps as the representative of California’s 23rd U.S. Congressional District might be understating it. Kokkonen, an immigrant from Finland, left his country as a teenager and moved to New York. He transferred to Westmont College where he met his wife and eventually graduated. more

Heat GM Randy Pfund resigns, Pat Riley takes over

Heat general manager Randy Pfund, who helped Miami win the 2006 NBA championship as the highlight of his 13 years with the franchise, resigned Monday. Pfund began coaching at a high school in Illinois in the mid-1970s, then went to Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif., where he worked for Chet Kammerer, who currently serves as the Heat’s vice president of player personnel. more
