Westmont names alumni, parent relations director

Teri Bradford Rouse, executive director of the Channel Islands YMCA Youth and Family Services branch, has been named senior director of alumni and parent relations at Westmont College. She graduated from Westmont in 1977, earned her master’s degree from USC then worked at Westmont as a resident director, director of residence life and associate dean of students from 1981 to 1998. more

National Christian College Fair Held Sept. 16

Representatives from over 30 regional and national Christian colleges and universities will be available to speak with students, parents, pastors and school counselors from 6-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 16 at Bayside Church, 8191 Sierra College Blvd. Besides William Jessup University, other institutions represented include Westmont College. more

Escondido church group gives food to the needy

Mision Vida Nueva church and the North County Food Bank have launched a food distribution center for needy families every Saturday evening at Pioneer Elementary School, the result of a school project by Deborah Graaff, an 18-year-old Sunday school teacher. The church’s new distribution program fulfills Graaff’s dream as she prepares to leave for Westmont College in Santa Barbara this fall. more

FREDRICKSON, Joan Bradley

Was born on Easter Sunday, April 5,1931. She was the daughter of Lester and Edith Bradley. She spoke at a Torrey conference at Biola University, a number of Westmont Chapels, even a conference in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. more

Man who left college for homelessness will speak

Reservations are now being taken for a Tuesday, Sept. 9 program at the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission New Life Center that will highlight the struggles of the homeless. Author Mike Yankoski will speak at the center during a dinner program. Yankoski gained a unique insight into America’s homeless problem when he and Sam purvic, a college friend, chose to leave school for five months and live as homeless men. He vividly describes his experiences in the book, “Under the Overpass.” Yankoski eventually did graduate from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif. more

Tom Schmidt Joins Marymount Faculty

Marymount announces the arrival of Tom Schmidt as 7th and 8th grade English teacher and Chair of Marymount’s English Department. Thomas Schmidt received his PhD from Cambridge University in 1985, an MA (summa cum laude) from Fuller Seminary in 1980, and a BA (magna cum laude) from Wheaton College in 1977. Dr. Schmidt taught in the religious studies department of Westmont College from 1983 to 1996, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 1988 and was consistently ranked by students in the top five percent of the faculty. more

Brothers’ New Recycling Business Puts Waste to Good Use

Brothers Craig Boyce and Mark Craig have launched Coastal Byproducts, an earth-friendly recycling business specializing in the free recycling of grease and cooking oil from restaurants, hotels and other locations where food is served. Craig, 38, is a graduate of Westmont College, and Mark, 30, graduated from UCSB. Both have economics degrees and a strong track record as partners in a power-washing service for Central Coast businesses. more

The Current: Obama Evangelicals

There appear to be small but growing pockets of evangelicals either flirting with Barack Obama or supporting him outright. Elena Yee is one of them. She’s an administrator at the Evangelical Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. She’s also a life-long Republican. But this year, she’s supporting Obama. more

Esther Bergman

Esther Bergman, long-time resident of the Tulare-Woodville area died in Tulare August 10, 2008.  She was 89 years old. Esther was born in Langdon, Iowa on October 8, 1918.  After graduating from Whittier High School, Esther attended Westmont College where she met a young man from Tulare, Luther Bergman. more

Scripps Unites For Rotary Cup Win

Scripps United BU-10 won the BU-10 Silver division of the Encinitas Rotary Cup after defeating Nott’s Forest, 1-0, in the finals. Coach Cees Molenaar played for the third team of Ajax Amsterdam, won the statewide Junior College championship with Foothill College and helped Westmont College reach a No. 1 national ranking in NAIA. more
