Keck Telescope has new home : Powerful device moved to all-new observatory at Westmont College

Engineers lowered Westmont College’s Keck Telescope into an all-new observatory near the campus baseball field Thursday, and the instrument should soon be calibrated and ready for a public viewing next month. The yet-to-be named observatory — featuring a downstairs classroom and outside viewing platform — is the first structure to be completed as part of Westmont’s Master Plan, according to a news release. Using a large crane, a crew from Colorado-based DFM Engineering lowered the telescope into the new facility and installed it under a moveable metallic dome. Physics professor Michael Sommermann will work with students for about two weeks to calibrate the device. more
