Former Mexican President to Speak in S.B.

The annual Westmont President’s Breakfast continues to pull in big names, with an announcement Tuesday that former president of Mexico Vicente Fox will be the speaker at the fifth annual event in February. Fox will be speaking on “The Future of the Americas: Immigration, Globalization and Free Trade” when he comes to town, in the Grand Ballroom of Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort on February 19 at 7 a.m. more

Former president of Mexico Vicente Fox, whose 2000 election marked the first time in 71 years that the country’s Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, relinquished control of the national government, will speak in February at the fifth annual Westmont President’s Breakfast. The event is set for 7 a.m. on Feb. 19 in the Grand Ballroom of Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort. Mr. Fox’s address is entitled, “The Future of the Americas: Immigration, Globalization and Free Trade.” more

All Hail Rugby

Rugby is gaining wide exposure with the film Invictus, the story of the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa, where the spectacular success of the hometown Springboks helped bring together whites and blacks in the dicey first year of Nelson Mandela’s presidency…He discovered the sport on a visit to Santa Barbara, enrolled at Westmont College, and played for the Warriors’ rugby club. more

Mexico’s former President coming to Westmont

Vicente Fox, former President of Mexico, will be the guest speaker at Westmont College’s 2010 President’s Breakfast.  The event will be held at Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort in Santa Barbara February 19th. Westmont says Fox’s life reads like a movie script with his improbable rise from truck driver to CEO and resounding defeat of the reigning political party in Mexico. more

Moore gets 400th win as Warrior coach

Westmont Men’s Basketball (6-2) posted a 78-61 over the Keelhaulers of Cal State Maritime (7-8) to hand Warrior Head Coach John Moore the 400th win of his career. The milestone came in Moore’s 500th game as Westmont’s head coach. “It is a privilege to come back and coach at my alma mater and coach in the footsteps of a hero of mine – Chet Kammerer,” said Moore. more

YMCA Youth and Family Services Elects Chairman for Board of Managers

Dave Morley has been elected chairman of the board of managers of YMCA Youth and Family Services, a branch of the Channel Islands YMCA that operates Noah’s Anchorage Youth Crisis Shelter in downtown Santa Barbara, the Isla Vista Teen Center in the heart of Isla Vista and Street Outreach Services in the greater Santa Barbara area. Morley has had a distinguished career developing, implementing and managing admissions and recruiting efforts for colleges and universities on the West Coast. Before joining SBCC as an academic counselor with the Extended Opportunities Programs and Services program, he served as the dean of admissions and financial aid at Westmont College. more

William Smrtnik: Obituary

William R. Smrtnik Resident of Pittsburg William “Bill” Robert Smrtnik, 71, entered into rest following a lengthy illness on December 15, 2009 in Pittsburg. He was born in Illinois on August 14, 1938 to Frank and Frances Smrtnik. Bill received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Westmont College in Santa Barbara and his Masters Degree from San Francisco State. more

Debutantes celebrate after serving community for six years, 5,700 hours

The Conejo Valley Chapter of National Charity League Inc. hosted its 29th annual National Charity League Ball in November at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village. The mother-daughter community service organization formally presented 15 debutantes who graduated in June from local high schools…Brina Tianne Clark, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Randolph Clark of Westlake Village, Westmont College. more

Write On—Let’s Hope: On the Beat

Barnaby Conrad arrived in Santa Barbara in the early 1970s having written a blockbuster (Matador, three million copies sold so far), and decided to start a writers conference. … Meier did bring in name speakers, including cop novelist Joe Wambaugh (with an assist from Conrad). But when she moved the conference to Westmont College after the Miramar was out of the picture, participants found it difficult to find their way there and complained that no booze was available. more

Kiely now Westmont’s head coach

Westmont Athletic Director Dave Odell has named Kristi Kiely as the new head coach of Westmont women’s soccer, effective immediately. Kiely, who was promoted to Associate Head Coach last August, has served on the Warrior coaching staff for the last two seasons. “Kristi Kiely is the right person at the right time,” said Odell. more
