Coker basketball to open season against Pitt

Coker College head basketball coach, Dan Schmotzer, announced today that the Cobras will open the 2009-10 season by traveling to play the University of Pittsburgh in an exhibition game. In addition to the release of their 2009-10 schedule, Coach Schmotzer also announced the signing of 11 new players joining the Cobras this season. Highlighting this year’s recruiting class are the three transfers; Tom Wright, Ryan Aijian and Derek Bailey. Aijian is a 6-2 guard from Goleta, Calif. where he played at Westmont College, playing in 30 games averaging 2.3 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. more

CARLSBAD: Standout Army and Navy Academy grad drowns in swimming accident: Rory Graham was awaiting word on law school admission

A 23-year-old Oceanside man drowned in San Luis Obispo County while volunteering with a Carlsbad church’s youth camp. Rory Graham was swimming in Lake Nacimiento, a popular recreation area about 30 minutes outside Paso Robles, when he got into trouble for unknown reasons and began to go under, San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s officials said. He attended Westmont College in Santa Barbara, graduating in three years as a religious studies major, his mother said. more

Track and field Area coaches to speak at clinic today in Carpinteria

Four area coaches are among the presenters at the Know It All Clinic today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club. It was revived, in part, to help raise funds to defray the medical expenses of Westmont College and former Carpinteria coach John Larralde. Larralde was in a coma for a week and hospitalized for four weeks due to complications from the MRSA staph infection. more

SK looks to club ranks for another soccer coach

South Kitsap athletic director Ed Santos was successful with his previous club-to-high school coaching hire. Santos followed that route again Wednesday when he named Julie Cain as the school’s new girls soccer coach. Cain, who graduated from Shoreline’s Shorewood High, played center-midfield at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif., from 1992-95. She was an assistant coach the following year when Westmont had 15-5-2 record and ended the season ranked No. 1 in NAIA. more

PARTYING AT UCSB

The University of California, Goleta—I mean, Santa Barbara—made another top 10 list. The Princeton Review ranked the surfside school No. 10 on its list of top party schools. Oddly, perhaps, no other UC school made the grade. No one has fun at Berserkly? Nor did Westmont make the list. Maybe next year, but I doubt it. more

Gayle Beebe Joins Santa Barbara Symphony Board

Dr. Gayle Beebe has joined the Santa Barbara Symphony as one of its newest board members. Beebe assumed the leadership of Westmont College in Santa Barbara as its eighth president on July 1, 2007. Before Westmont, he served as president of Spring Arbor University in Michigan for seven years. more

Westmont College Moves to 802.11n Wireless

Westmont has about 1,350 students and 24 major buildings on its 111-acre campus. The college decided to upgrade to an all 802.11n network for two primary reasons. First, it had experienced a significant increase in mobile Internet usage among students and faculty and expects the trend to accelerate in the coming years. Westmont plans to use its 802.11n wireless network to support in-class and campus applications as well as providing Internet connectivity within residence halls and faculty residences. Second, Westmont’s existing deployment didn’t provide comprehensive indoor/outdoor coverage and wasn’t user friendly. more

SVOBODA, Robert Allan (Bob)

Age 83 went to be with our Lord and Savior on 7-21-09 as a result of sudden cardiac death. Bob was born in Lewistown, Montana on May 12, 1926. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Nell Svoboda, and a sister, Marcelyn. …  Bob and Jean founded and continue to sponsor the Debate and Speech Contests at Westmont College. more

Crabbe Begins Minor League Career

A month after signing with the Cincinnati Reds, Tim Crabbe has made five starts for the Billings Mustangs and is settling into the life of a minor league ball player. The Mustangs are the Rookie Advance Affiliate for the Reds in Billings, Montana. more
