Pascual Padilla enjoyed his experience as an assistant coach with the now-defunct Chico Force of the International Basketball League so much, he’s started up another professional team. Modesto’s Chris Gonzales (6-3) went to Westmont College and was a starting small forward with the Force and in Mexico. Orland’s Brian Erickson (6-4) will also play small forward after stints at Shasta College and Chico State. more

Locals in College Notebook: Rasp developing into complete player
The Westmont College men’s basketball coaches never fail to remind Dan Rasp (Camarillo) about the value of defense. The sophomore forward hears about it during practice, during games and during team meetings. Rasp has made defensive improvement a higher priority this season, and the investment is paying dividends. more
'Cannery Row' book is rich
After he wrote “The California Abalone Industry – A Pictorial History,” A.L. Lundy, a Santa Barbara resident, turned his attention to John Steinbeck. A member of the Cannery Row Foundation board of directors since 1995, Lundy interviewed fellow foundation members and many other Monterey Peninsula residents as he compiled his notes for this book. Two delightful chapters, “Life with Ed” and “Life on the Row,” close out the volume. Along with a list of his sources, Lundy includes an appendix of the novel Cannery Row written by Steve Cook, an English professor at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. more
