Canon Perdido St. Featuring music composed in Spain and colonial Mexico in the 16th and 17th centuries, depicting the story of Christ’s arrest, trial and crucifixion. SOUTH ON 101: Exploring the threads of history

History abounds this weekend in Santa Barbara —on stage, in an exhibit and in the spoken word…Rare “Passion” Director Grey Brothers, Westmont College’s associate professor of music, found a manuscript dating from the 1640s by Spanish composer Luis Coronado in the archives of the Mexico City Cathedral. more

Hubb is a multi-faceted writer, musician and local historian…Ms. Hubb holds a bachelor of arts in English from Westmont College. more

San Buenaventura hosts 17th-century Mexican sacred music

Sacred music composed in Spain and colonial Mexico during the 16th and 17th centuries will be performed by the Westmont Chamber Singers March 28, 7 p.m., at San Buenaventura Mission, Ventura. The ensemble will perform several works by Spanish composers, including Luis Coronado’s “Passio secundum Joannem (Passion according to John).” more

Montecito planners take up speed limits

Wednesday was largely a day of getting up to speed for the Montecito Planning Commission, as members got various briefings from staff on speed limits, the Westmont College Master Plan, the growth management ordinance and stormwater practices. County staff is exploring the possibilities of changing or amending speed limit rules to comply with California regulations that seem to be causing an incremental increase in speed limits on local roads. more

Santa Barbara Symphony announces 2010 – 11 season : Company takes another step into the digital zeitgeist with its first live Internet-based conference

When the going gets tough, the Internet-savvy get going. The Santa Barbara Symphony, like so many businesses and households in these hard economic times, is hunting for new subscribers and struggling to maintain the pre-recession status quo…Enlisting a phalanx of choirs  including the Santa Barbara Choral Society, the Westmont College Choir, and SBCC’s Quire of Voyces and international soloists soprano Susanna Phillips, mezzo Elise Quagliata, tenor Bryan Griffin and bass-baritone Jason Grant the Symphony Orchestra will have The Granada stage overflowing with musicians, launching the season in a grand manner. more

Westmont to break in new track on Saturday

For many sports fans, nothing says spring like the crack of a baseball bat. But for others, the season can best be measured in meters, and enjoyed most thoroughly in the presence of jumping bodies, racing hearts, spent legs and the pure snap of a starter pistol that commands much of the action at a proper track and field meet. more

Clovis West star Ritchey signs with Westmont

Jason Ritchey, one of the leading scorers in Clovis West history, has agreed to play for Westmont College in Santa Barbara on a full scholarship. The 6-5 guard averaged 23 points a game and had 12 games of 25 points or more, despite routinely drawing defenses geared for him. more
