Two high school football teams hope moving key players will be a hit on defense: Big-time prospect

Junior pitcher Lucas Giolito from North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake was clocked throwing his fastball between 90 and 93 mph at the Stanford camp last week, according to his high school coach, Matt LaCour. Giolito has received multiple scholarship offers from Pacific 10 and Big West schools. He was at the Area Code tryouts Tuesday at Westmont College. more

Dr. Courtney Baldridge: Pediatric Society of Greater Dallas Award for Excellence in Pediatric Medicine

It was no surprise to anyone that Dr. Courtney Baldridge opted to become a pediatrician — except perhaps to herself. The 26-year-old California native said she planned to become a nurse and didn’t think otherwise until her freshman year at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif. “When I was really young, I felt strongly called that God wanted me to go to another country and do some kind of work with people who have less and need more hope,” she said. “I really wanted the one-on-one patient care that nursing offers, so until college I hadn’t really considered going to medical school.” more

Week in Sports: Bergmann Court to be Dedicated

Major league scouts and college baseball coaches will be heading to Westmont College’s Russ Carr Field on Tuesday and Wednesday (July 6-7) to observe the cream of the crop from Southern California high schools at the 2010 Area Code Tryouts. On Tuesday, tryouts will be held for Los Angeles County and San Fernando Valley region players. Tryouts for players from Orange County, Riverside, the Inland Empire and San Diego regions will be held on Wednesday. Both sessions begin at 9 a.m. and are open to the public. more

CAMA Re-Elects Dolores Hsu as Board President

The Community Arts Music Association of Santa Barbara, entering its 92nd concert season in 2010-11, has re-elected Dolores Hsu as president of its board of directors. … Under her leadership CAMA has developed a music appreciation program that brings systematic music instruction to area elementary schools. In addition to instruction in music appreciation, the program includes regular live music performances by students and faculty from UCSB, Westmont College and SBCC. more

Gauchos land transfer in Hornbuckle

UCSB’s men’s basketball team has snatched up another big rebound, announcing on Thursday that Colorado transfer Keegan Hornbuckle has accepted a scholarship offer from the Gauchos. … Hornbuckle said being near family also factored in his decision. His brother Matt, who played last year for Moorpark College, recently signed with Westmont College. Their parents, Michael and Donna, live in Westlake Village. more

NAIA 2010 NAIA-SIDA Annual Convention Set For July 3 at Menlo College

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Sports Information Directors Association (SIDA) is ready to kick-off the 2010  NAIA-SIDA Convention on July 3 on the campus of Menlo College in Atherton, Calif. This annual event will be hosted by the California Pacific Athletic Conference and Menlo College, which is located 30 miles south of San Francisco. The annual College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Convention proceeds NAIA-SIDA from July 4-7. … There will be live and free video running during the entire one-day Convention.
