Rathbun, UT Tyler’s New Volleyball Coach

UT Tyler has named Joanna Rathbun as the University’s new head women’s volleyball coach. Rathbun comes to UT Tyler after serving as the head coach at the Fairhill School in Dallas since 2007. From 2001-2007, Rathbun was the head coach at Dallas Christian College where she started the volleyball program. Under Rathbun, DCCC won the 2007 National Christian College Athletic Association Southwest Conference Championship and she was selected as the league’s coach of the year. Rathbun is a graduate of Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Cal., and is nationally certified personal trainer. more

Santa Barbara is ripe with book clubs and reading programs, but few go back further than UCSB Reads…Around town, students at Westmont College, Santa Barbara City College, Antioch University, and a slew of area high schools will be working through Enrique’s Journey in the classroom. more

Warriors break in renovated Russ Carr Field

For Westmont Baseball, the best present of the holiday season was an opportunity to practice on the newly renovated Russ Carr Field for the first time on Monday. Work began on the new field in early May of 2009 and since then the team has practiced on the Abbott Tennis Courts and shared Lovik Field with the men’s and women’s soccer teams and the cross country teams. more

Despite riding a 5-game winning streak, the Westmont men’s basketball team looked rather sluggish on Tuesday night against visiting Vanguard… At least for the first five minutes. more

Letters: Westmont basketball a winner

While attending the Westmont/Concordia game in the Tom Byron Classic at Westmont College, it was not apparent who the dominant team was. Similar records and not clearly different in stature, the teams looked evenly matched. During warm-ups, the men from Concordia, Neb., looked like a great shooting team. Draining shot after unopposed shot, they looked impressive. For Westmont, point guard Chris (CJ) Jackson was the picture of focus and forward John Miller seemed like a man on a mission, wearing his intensity openly. more

Providence Hall Is a High School with a Difference

At 3-year-old Providence Hall, the private high school’s aim is to produce graduates who can make a difference in their own lives, as well as in their community. “We are based on our historic Christian faith, as well as our classical heritage,” Headmaster David K. Winter said of the school, which calls itself a “strong, college-preparatory Christian” institution. … Winter, formerly the president of Westmont College, is headmaster. The academic dean is Tim Loomer. Future student enrollment is projected to be several hundred, when the school is at full capacity, Winter said. Tuition is set at $15,800 per year but, he emphasized, the school offers “considerable discounts for families that cannot pay.” more
