Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit Wins Major Competition

The Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit (SBAU) beat out over 30 other contestants from over half-a-dozen states and six countries to receive Astronomy Magazine’s 2010 Out-of-This-World Award honoring astronomy outreach programs. As a recipient of this award, SBAU won a $2,500 cash prize that will go toward building its award-winning telescope. more

Former UCSB women’s basketball coach Mark French enjoyed watching both the men’s and women’s NCAA Tournaments that finished up earlier this week, but that’s not what is getting him back on the sidelines for the first time in three years this weekend. more

Five Alumni Inducted Into Santa Barbara High School Wall of Fame

The Santa Barbara High School auditorium was filled with high school students and community members on March 18 for the Wall of Fame ceremony. Introduced were five former SBHS graduates, outstanding Dons taking their place among the celebrated graduates pictured along the main hall of the school — the Wall of Fame. more

Three years after he coached his last UCSB women’s basketball game in the NCAA tournament, Mark French is coming out of the stands and returning to courtside. “Big Daddy,” as he was known by his players, will be honorary coach of the Providence Hall All-Stars in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. Friday (April 8) at Westmont College. French’s team of women will oppose the Past Prime Time Players, a men’s team whose name speaks for itself. Admission to the game, a benefit for the prep school Providence Hall, is $5 for adults and $2 for children. more
