‘Bassoon and Other Species’ concert at Ojai Art Center

A bassoon boom will hit Ojai on Sunday. Add a flutist to five bassoonists and you get “Bassoons and Other Species,” a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ojai Art Center. The program will feature Andy Radford of Ojai (pictured) and his bassoonist colleagues — Lyndy McGrody, Tamerin Busia, Brittany McHargue and Cameron O’Neil — plus flutist Carol Joe. more

Paul Willis to Be Installed As Santa Barbara’s Poet Laureate at City Hall April 12

Local poet and Westmont professor Paul Willis will be installed as the City’s next Poet Laureate at the April 12th City Council meeting shortly after 2pm. The occasion will be celebrated through the reading of a Proclamation from the Mayor recognizing the contributions and accomplishments of Mr. Willis and April as National Poetry Month in Santa Barbara. As the incoming Poet Laureate Willis will read a poem in honor of the occasion. more

Public Ceremony for Paul Willis, S.B.’s New Poet Laureate

Paul Willis, Westmont professor of English, has been selected as Santa Barbara Poet Laureate, a position the city established in 2004 to “advance awareness of and appreciation for literary arts and humanities within the greater Santa Barbara community.” Willis will be installed during a brief, public ceremony on Tuesday, April 12, at 2 p.m. in City Hall. more

Judge Rules in Favor of Tea Fire Victims

In an early but small victory for Lance and Carla Hoffman — the only two victims from 2008’s Tea Fire — Judge Colleen Sterne allowed their lawsuit against the owners of the property where the fire began to continue on almost fully intact. The judge said Monday morning one of the causes of action, negligence per se (which is implied negligence when a statute is violated), did not have to be its own cause of action, but could be argued under a general negligence cause of action. more

Westmont Offers Music Teacher Credential

Students majoring in music at Westmont will now be able to earn a teaching credential as well as a bachelor’s degree. The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing has approved Westmont’s application to offer a single-subject teaching credential for music, one of the few colleges to do so on the Central Coast. more
