Santa Barbara Reads Selection Announced: Public Library and UCSB Reads Program Partner Again

The Santa Barbara Public Library System has announced that Moonwalking With Einstein is the selection for the upcoming “Santa Barbara Reads” program, which is now in its 12th year. The public library is partnering with University of California Santa Barbara Library, Santa Barbara City College Library, Antioch University Library and Westmont College Library in a community-wide program focusing on the same book. more

…Camarillo: In the first game, Daniel Zamores scored off an assist from Carlos Tiscareno. In the second game, Moses Gutierrez and Hector Molina scored the goals — both assisted by Tiscareno. Greg Ford and freshman Jordan Duran combined for the shutout in net. Senior captain Matt Lariviere, who is being recruited by Westmont College, had an excellent all-around performance. more

As the calendar creeps toward the end of December, scholastic polo has kicked into gear. Across the country, junior high and high school students come together to form teams representing a local club. … On the weekend of January 12-13, Santa Barbara will have a rematch with Central Coast, while the Westmont women’s team will play the Cal Poly women’s team here in Santa Barbara. more

ART REVIEW: The Art That Was, and Continues to Be – Despite ongoing funding woes, 2012 was another strong year for art in Santa Barbara, with transitions and new marshalling of cultural forces

If it is possible for an avid art-watcher, professional or otherwise, to look back over a year of art-looking and report that the mind dizzies, it’s a good sign that art is alive and well. And so it goes in Santa Barbara circa 2012. … Art spaces have been in flux in the three higher educational institutions in town. Ironically, while Westmont College boasts and hosts the newest venue in its still-young museum of art — one of the finest and most embracing art spaces in the area now, well worth a visit or three — things were morphing at Santa Barbara City College and UCSB. more


To say Aolani Rueff’s senior year at Westmont College has been eventful would certainly be an understatement. The forward on the Warriors’ women’s soccer team, a graduate of Santa Ynez High School, led the Warriors to the playoffs with offensive production comprised of consistent play-making and loads of crucial goals. more

Focus on kids : Kids+Cameras designed to help Thai and local students learn photography skills

For children in northern Thailand, photography may change their lives. It could even save them. Santa Barbara photographers Robby Barthelmess and Courtney Owen went to a village near Chiang Rai in March 2011 for four days to teach kids, ages 5 through their teens, how to tell their stories through photography. Working with a resource center operated by The SOLD Project, an organization that helps to prevent children from falling prey to human trafficking, namely slavery and forced prostitution, the two shared their skills with about 30 boys and girls — some of whom had never held a camera. more

The Santa Barbara Historical Museumrang in the spirit of the season at its Holiday Gala 2012 80th Anniversary, once again transforming the beautiful museum courtyard for family-friendly festivities. Carolers from Westmont College — in formal black dresses and tuxedos with red bow ties — cheerfully sang holiday tunes near the entryway of the museum, which was adorned with pine wreaths covered in white lights and seasonal red poinsettias. more

BizHawk: Gilli’s Grill Closes After Four Years on South Broadway in Santa Maria Earns Business Plan Award, a one-stop planning/booking resource for camping trips and equipment, took first place at the 23rd annual Westmont College’s Collegiate Entrepreneurship Business Plan Competition. Students Davis Darnall, Sterling Montes, Tyler Nordlund and Henry Prevette presented their winning venture plan to an overflow crowd of more than 90 people in Westmont’s Founders Room earlier this month. more
