Westmont College Welcomes ‘Globally Driven’ First-Year Students: College welcomes 339 students and their parents for orientation

The 339 first-year students representing Westmont College’s Class of 2016 arrived for orientation beginning Thursday. The first day of classes for all Westmont students is Monday. During orientation, students will move into their residence halls, tour the campus, enjoy dinner in the remodeled Dining Commons and attend a lecture by English professor Jamie Friedman. more

Physical Therapist Opens Nonprofit Research Institute of Human Movement: Dr. Maury Hayashida’s organization also serves as a platform for public education and health-care service

A Santa Barbara-based physical therapist has founded the Research Institute of Human Movement, a nonprofit focused on promoting the role of movement in human performance and quality of life. Dr. Maury Hayashida, who owns Hayashida & Associates Physical Therapy, said his experience as a physical therapist convinced him that the South Coast needed an organization that could serve as a platform for academics, students and clinicians to collaborate on research and solutions to movement-related pain and disability. … The Research Institute of Human Movement, whose staff also includes project managers Andrea Trader and Jacob Goodin and administrative specialist Jasmine Stellar, is already preparing a pair of studies for submission to peer-reviewed journals. Both studies were conducted jointly by undergraduate kinesiology students at Westmont College and local physical therapists from Hayashida & Associates. more

Fire Causes Minor Damage at Montecito Home: Blaze started in a pile of cardboard and paper on a patio, according to firefighters

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a blaze Monday afternoon at a home near Westmont College, according to the Montecito Fire Protection District. The fire was discovered and reported shortly before 3 p.m. by a pest-control company employee who was working at the home in the 800 block of Chelham Way, said fire district spokeswoman Geri Ventura. more

Norwegian Printmaker Opens New Season at Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art: Jan Albert Fürst Kolstad’s exhibition will include free opening reception on Aug. 30

Norwegian printmaker Jan Albert Fürst Kolstad, who uses light and nature to create mood and atmosphere in his art, opens a new season at the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art Aug. 23-Oct. 13. A free, public opening reception for “Jan Albert Furst Kolstad: Prints” will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 30 at the museum on the Westmont College campus, 955 La Paz Road in Montecito. more

Jim was born November 13, 1930 in Taft, CA and he went home to the Lord August 1, 2012 in Santa Barbara. He was a graduate of Westmont College and American Baptist Seminary of West. Jim loved Jesus and he loved people. more

Keady elevation not done deal for Johnnies

The promotion of former Purdue coach Gene Keady from special advisor to St. John’s assistant coach isn’t the foregone conclusion many have reported it to be, sources have told The Post. While Keady remains an internal option, Red Storm coach Steve Lavin’s search is still ongoing to replace former assistant and X’s and O’s guru Mike Dunlap, who was hired as head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats in June. … One name that intrigues Lavin, a source said, is brother-in-law John Moore, the longtime head coach at NAIA Westmont College who has compiled a 374-206 record in 19 seasons at the California school. more

Ricky Ho and Cindy Abrami were co-champions of Thursday’s Westmonster 5k, each claiming their second title in three years in “Santa Barbara’s Toughest 5k.” The Westmonster course winds through the campus of Westmont and features one especially unforgiving uphill stretch. more

192 opens after sinkhole repaired

Highway 192 at Westmont Road reopened Friday afternoon after repair of a large sinkhole, Caltrans officials said. The highway, also known as Sycamore Canyon Road, had been closed since July 25, according to a Caltrans news release. more

Buckley & Moyer: Friendly rivals Former stars for Simi, Royal soccer will face each other in college

The rivalry between Shannon Buckley and Katie Moyer is going strong on its second decade. Buckley and Moyer met on the soccer pitch—on opposing teams—when they were 7.They continued the rivalry for Simi Valley and Royal high schools’ girls’ soccer teams. Buckley suited up for the Pioneers while Moyer played for the Highlanders. … Buckley and Moyer moved their friendly competition to the NAIA’s Golden State Athletic Conference, where they’ll be donning the opposite colors of their respective high schools’ teams. Buckley will sport the green of Concordia University of Irvine Eagles and Moyer the maroon of the Westmont College Warriors. more

Highway 192 at Westmont Road Again Open for Traffic: Large sinkhole closed the Montecito roadway in late July

Highway 192 at Westmont Road in Montecito, closed in late July for a sinkhole about 3 feet in diameter, reopened Friday afternoon, according to Caltrans. Detours that had been set up along Sycamore Canyon Road, Alameda Padre Serra and Barker Pass Road are no longer required, Caltrans said. Caltrans has said a contract crew was working to check underground utilities, replace a failed drainage culvert and rebuild the section of roadway, located near Westmont College. more
