In 2010, they donated $1 million to Westmont’s “Bright Hope for Tomorrow” campaign, which helped provide funding for the Adams Center for the Visual Arts, Winter Hall for Science and Mathematics, athletic fields, a new observatory and other master plan improvements. Also in 2010, they gave $500,000 to Unity Shoppe and they recently gave $100,000 to Casa Esperanza, the cash-strapped homeless shelter on Santa Barbara’s Lower Eastside. more

Cuesta College students to perform play at prestigious festival

The universities involved are Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Fort Lewis College in Colorado and Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University and Weber State University in Utah. All are part of Region 8, which includes more than 300 colleges and universities in Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah and Guam. more

‘UCSB Reads 2014’ Selects ‘The Big Burn’ by Timothy Egan

Multiple copies of “The Big Burn” are available for loan, including e-book and audiobook versions. The Santa Barbara Public Library also offers “Book Club in a Bag” kits, which feature 10 copies of the book and a set of reader questions geared toward book club participants. The Luria Library at Santa Barbara City College, and the Westmont College Library are also partners in the program. more

2013’S BIGGEST STORIES No. 10: College success

Azusa Pacific’s women (16-3-1) won the Pacific West Conference title, but the Cougars, finishing their transition from the NAIA, aren’t eligible for the NCAA Division II playoffs until next year. So they went off to the National Christian College Association of America tournament in Kissimmee, Fla., and pulled out four victories — with a 2-1 overtime decision over Dallas Baptist in the final — to claim their second national title.
