The 90th anniversary of the Men’s Intercollegiate kicked off Monday, April 9 with the fourth-seeded Western Regional Champs Westmont College, coached by John Westley, versus fifthseeded wildcard selectee out of the Central region, Southern Methodist University, coached by Tom Goodspeed. more

Indians grooming another Mustang: Following the footsteps of Brian Mundell, Kevin Morgan homers in blowout win for North County

Last summer, Cal Poly slugger Brian Mundell played on the North County Indians before joining the Mustangs and went on to lead the Mustangs with 11 home runs. … As a member of the Indians, Morgan came into the game hitting .318 on a team that stars several local high school products, including Templeton graduate Michael Frigon, Arroyo Grande’s Kyle Brown and San Luis Obispo’s Sinjin Todd. … Frigon will play for the Westmont College program this year. Frigon walked twice in Friday’s game, stole a base, and scored a run, but was held hitless, going 0 for 3. more

ART REVIEW: Bodies of, and in, Work – Photographers from various backgrounds gather at Brooks Institute’s Gallery 27 for an impressive community effort

News of the Brooks Institute of Photography’s looming plan to migrate from its longtime Santa Barbara base to a more economically feasible Ventura campus comes as something of a blow to the area’s self-identity, in terms of the academic and aesthetic landscape of Santa Barbara. For decades, Brooks has brought budding and established photographers to this part of the 805, with some staying in the area post-studies. A post-Brooks Santa Barbara will take some getting used to, but, for the time being, at least we can take some consolation in the remaining gallery programming in the Gallery 27 in the Cota Street Brooks compound. … They are linked to Brooks’ student body and faculty, past and present, and come from Westmont, Santa Barbara City College, and Santa Barbara High School’s acclaimed VADA Academy program, as well as from the healthy pool of photographers lurking in our midst. more

Engagement: Trudell – Newton

Laura Trudelle and Jesse David Newton are engaged to be married this August. Laura is the daughter of Paul and Sylvia Trudelle of Portola Valley, Calif., and Jesse is the son of New Wave Dave and Kim Newton of Carpinteria. The couple, who met at Westmont College, plans to settle in Santa Barbara, where Trudelle teaches math and Newton works in sales. more

Sweating through summer: Carpinteria’s Matt Organista to try his triathlon skills in London

Matt Organista has gone from a competitor in Carpinteria Hiigh School sports to a hopeful for thiis September’s Triathlon Age Group World Championships in London. Along the way, the 23-year-old has mixed in some track and cross country competitions at Santa Barbara City College and Westmont College-where he ran a 25:22 cross country 5-miler. more

Hayes Broker Liam Murphy Named Katherine Harvey Fellow

The Santa Barbara Foundation has announced its selections for the 2013-14 Katherine Harvey Fellows, an 18-month leadership development program. … Liam Murphy, a commercial real estate broker and Westmont College alumnus, was chosen for the current class. The Katherine Harvey Fellows program is selected from nominations made by Santa Barbara Foundation trustees and staff members and from alumni of the Katherine Harvey Fellows program. more

Sustainability conference inspires big ideas

It’s been said that you can’t go home again. Tell that to UC Santa Barbara-based founders of the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference, who this week brought their biggest- and best-yet event back to the campus where it was created more than a decade ago. The gathering was born in 2002, when 100 guests from across the UC system convened at UCSB to talk best practices. The conference now in full swing, and concluding Thursday, boasts 900 attendees representing some 80 institutions and organizations, including UC, CSU, California Community College, and private and independent campuses, as well as private industry and community members. … The conference continues through Thursday. A full slate of workshops, field trips, and presentations on Tuesday will feature a 4 p.m. closing keynote by Drew Dellinger that is free and open to the public. The West Coast Symphony Orchestra will perform a free “American Salute!,” a free concert, at 5 p.m. July 4 at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Sunken Garden, 1100 Anacapa St. Michael Shasberger, Adams Chair of Music and Worship at Westmont College, will conduct the ensemble as it plays a mix of patriotic and Broadway numbers. more
