Gerald Carpenter: Westmont to Debut Randall VanderMey’s ‘Platinum Circle’

Westmont College’s ever imaginative and phenomenally talented professor of theater arts, John Blondell, will direct the first production — ever, anywhere — ofRandall VanderMey’s Platinum Circle: A Play in Three One-Acts. Reflections on ethnic relations in “PC Agenda or God’s Plan?”

People of various ethnic backgrounds from schools such as Vanguard University, Westmont College, Bethel College, Seattle Pacific University and Simpson University were in the room.  It was neat to see people from various places coming together with a passion for the topic. more

IN BRIEF: SB poet laureate hosting reading

Santa Barbara Poet Laureate and Westmont English professor Paul Willis will host the winter reading of the Santa Barbara Poetry Series, 7-8:15 p.m. Saturday at the Contemporary Arts Forum, 653 Paseo Nuevo. Three local and visiting poets, Kyli Sessions, Kurt Brown and Catherine Hodges, will read selected works at the public event. Admission is free. more

Student leaders totaling 150 from seven Santa Barbara-area high schools were nominated by their schools to participate in the two-day Global Leadership Connection Leadership Conference, co-sponsored with UCSB and Westmont College. more

Debbie Croft: College student returns home to play a tune

She loves photography, sports, designing and making jewelry, and of course, music. As a member of the Mariposa County High School Grizzly Band, she often learned to play an instrument to fill a need within the band. Melissa Rose Mela Caputo was named after her grandmother who passed away only hours before she was born. Her nickname, though, was Mud Muffin. She always managed to find a mud puddle to plop herself down in when she was old enough to toddle around the ranch. … Melissa and the Westmont College orchestra will appear Monday at 8 p.m. in the high school’s Fiester Auditorium. Admission is free, but a goodwill offering will be accepted. more


Grizzly alumnus returns with orchestra

The Mariposa County High School Grizzly Band will host the Westmont College Orchestra on Monday, Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. The concert will be held in the Richard D. Fiester Auditorium. Former Grizzly Melissa Caputo performs in the orchestra. Admission is free. more
