Warriors do Moore proud : Westmont women honor coach’s late husband in win

Basketball took a back seat to a real life struggle on Saturday night at Murchison Gym. The Westmont women’s basketball team defeated visiting San Diego Christian 76-56 in the Alex Moore Classic. Alex Moore, the late husband of Westmont women’s basketball coach Kirsten Moore, passed away last May as a result of complications from surgery for Crohn’s disease, and his life was celebrated with a special halftime celebration in his honor. more

Retired Gen. Colin Powell, a groundbreaking former U.S. Secretary of State, has been announced as the keynote speaker at the eighth annual Westmont College President’s Breakfast. The event is scheduled from 7 to 9 a.m. Friday, March 1, in the Grand Ballroom of Fess Parker’s DoubleTree Resort in Santa Barbara. Tickets, $125 per person, go on sale Friday, Feb. 1, at 9 a.m. at www.westmont.edu. Seating is limited and tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, the college said. more

Westmont’s “Alex Moore Classic” Honors Former Professor

Westmont College hosted the Alex Moore Classic Saturday night honoring the life of former Westmont professor Alex Moore. Moore passed away in May of 2012, resulting of complications from surgery for Crohn’s disease. more

Team supports widowed coach

When the Westmont Warriors girls basketball team tips off Saturday against San Diego Christian, it will be playing to help support Head Coach Kirsten Moore and her 6-month old daughter, Alexis. Mrs. Moore’s husband, Alex Moore, died last May from complications after undergoing surgery for Crohn’s disease. The Alex Moore Classic, 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Murchison Gym, Westmont College, 955 La Paz Road, will help support the Moore family and Crohn’s research through the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. more

Motorcyclist in fatal crash was Westmont student

The 21-year-old motorcyclist who died Tuesday in a crash on Cold Springs Road has been identified by investigators as Nicholas Dale Davis, a Westmont College student. Known as Nick to family, friends and peers, Mr. Davis was a senior economics and business major from Pacific Grove. He likely would have graduated in May. more

Westmont Student Dies in Motorcycle Accident: Nick Davis Killed in 100 MPH Crash on Cold Springs Road

Nick Davis, a 21-year-old senior economics and business major at Westmont College, died in a motorcycle accident late Tuesday night on Cold Springs Road. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic death,” said school president Gayle Beebe in a prepared statement. “Our hearts and prayers go out to Nick’s family and friends, and our Student Life and counseling staff members are available to meet with students struggling with this loss.” more

Motorcyclist killed in Montecito

A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday evening in a crash on Cold Springs Road, near the intersection of La Paz Road, authorities said. The motorcyclist, a 21-year-old Santa Barbara man whose identity has not been released, was driving at a speed estimated in excess of 100 mph when he lost control of the motorcycle near the south exit of Westmont College, Sgt. Matthew Dawson of the California Highway Patrol said in a news release. more

Retired general and former Secretary of State Colin Powell will be the keynote speaker at the eighth annual Westmont President’s Breakfast in March. The President’s Breakfast is sponsored by the Westmont Foundation and area businesses “to promote discussion and consideration of current issues among local community leaders,” said Scott Craig, manager of media relations at Westmont College, in a news release. more
