ART REVIEW: Specific Location, Diverse Notions – THIS YEAR’S SENIOR ART SHOW AT WESTMONT COLLEGE TAKES ROOT IN THE VERY MUSEUM HOSTING THE SHOW, WHICH OPENED THE YEAR THESE STUDENTS BEGAN THEIR UNDERGRADUATE WORK ON CAMPUS

Coming up with a suitable exhibition title for a gathering of art and artists as inherently diverse as a student art show — such as the current Westmont College Senior Art Show — can be tricky business, and fodder for clever outside-the-box thinking. Last year, the graduating class opted for “12 Speed,” linked to the clean dozen-fold number of artists involved.

This year, the going gets rather unrepeatable, with “34° 26′ 59.33″N, 119°39’43.29″W.” Try saying that five times in rapid succession. In fact, though, the mouthful, mathful title has a particular and telling relevance, being the precise longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates of the Westmont Museum of Art, a grand structure — as well as aesthetic, inspirational power spot on campus, and magnet for visiting art-seekers — that opened in synch with this graduating class’ entry to studies here. read more
