Walking On Sunshine : Westmont baseball seniors get a second swing to enjoy graduation

When their classmates took to the commencement stage at Westmont’s Russell Carr Field on Saturday, the baseball team was busy claiming the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament crown in El Cajon. It was tough for the nine graduating seniors to miss one of the most iconic moments of their college careers, but the sacrifice was made willingly by the Warriors. more

Lauren McCoy had plenty of options as to where she could play basketball in college.

And for good reason.

She’s won individual honors, she’s won league titles in multiple sports, she’s won Dick Niclai Tournament titles. McCoy has garnered plenty of recognition for her achievements over the course of her four-year varsity career at Arcata High School.

But when it came to making the decision as to where she’s going to play basketball at the next level, McCoy went with the place that felt like home.

In front of friends and family at the Arcata High School library on Wednesday night, McCoy put pen to paper on her National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. more

 

Fourth Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships Horses & Horsepower

The first and second times were thrilling.  The third time was a charm.  The fourth time is shaping up to be the best yet. We’re talking about one of the Valley’s most spectacular social occasions and an event that has gone from a bold experiment in fusing a sport on the rise with a region’s love of exotic cars.  In four years it has become one of Arizona’s signature events and has caught the attention of the United States Polo Association.  We’re talking, of course, about the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Horses & Horsepower.   … Sunday’s action will showcase Julio Arellano, the top polo players in the U.S. and Patrick Uretz of Westmont College in Santa Barbara, the top college polo player in the country. more

Odell turns over San Marcos coaching reins to Boucher

Dave Odell said the time was right for him to hand over the coaching reins of the San Marcos boys varsity basketball team. Odell stepped down after two years at the helm, guiding the Royals to back-to-back CIF playoff appearances, including the 3-AA quarterfinals in 2013. Assistant coach Landon Boucher will take over the position. Boucher, like Odell, played his college basketball at Westmont. more

Sports Highlights: May 7-18 Westmont Moves a Step Closer to NAIA World Series

Santa Barbara City College will host a Southern Cal Super Regional baseball series for the first time this weekend at Pershing Park.  … Westmont College also had a successful week in the Golden State Athletic Conference baseball tournament. The No. 4-seeded Warriors (38-17) lost their opener to San Diego Christian, the No. 1 seed, but then proceeded to eliminate No. 3 The Master’s and No. 2 Vanguard to earn another matchup against San Diego Christian.more

SOLVANG – The inspiration and talent of the late artist Channing Peake will be discussed Saturday at the Elverhoj Museum of History and Art in Solvang. … Tony Askew, professor emeritus of Westmont College, and Cheri Peake, the artist’s widow, will give their own perspectives of his work. Mr. Askew is expected to discuss Mr. Peake’s methods, materials, composition and use of color while Mrs. Peake will share her knowledge of her late husband’s inspirations, using personal stories. more
