Observatory Opens Early for Blood Moon

The second total lunar eclipse of the year will be the focus of a free, public viewing on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 2:30-4:30 a.m. at the Westmont Observatory.

The special viewing occurs in conjunction with the Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit, whose members bring their own telescopes to Westmont for public use. more

Westmont Homecoming to Honor Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen as Alumna of the Year

Westmont College will honor California Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen, class of 1996, as Alumna of the Year during Homecoming 2014, Oct. 17-19.

Olsen, who takes over as the next Assembly Republican leader in November, will join Young Alumnus Award winner Daniel Zia ’06 and Global Service Award winners Byron ’82 and Lisa Repko ’84 Borden at the All-Alumni Brunch celebration from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 on Magnolia Lawn. more

Total Lunar Eclipse Set for Early Wednesday

Santa Barbara County residents will get their second glimpse of a total lunar eclipse early Wednesday with the return of the celestial event often referred to as a “blood moon.” … The total lunar eclipse starts about 2 a.m. Wednesday, but the Westmont College Observatory will open at 1 a.m. when the eclipse starts to take shape, he said. more

Amanda Stylianou may not know it, but she is a textbook example of a positive role model. Stylianou, a resident of the Skillman section of Montgomery, truly is a woman who has put her education to a good and practical use. … In 2006, with a degree in sociology from Westmont College, an interdenominational Christian liberal arts college in Santa Barbara, California, Stylianou had only just begun her journey of education and practical accomplishment. more

Monthly Public Telescope Night

Westmont Public Telescope Night. See cool stuff in the night sky through
telescopes set up by the Astronomical Unit, the local amateur astronomy
club sponsored by the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. Most
months the large telescope at the observatory is also available for viewing,
run by the Physics Department at Westmont. Observations are weather
permitting, are held on the third Friday of each month, and are free to the
public. The observatory is next to the baseball field. more

BizHawk: Westmont Graduates Opening Captain Fatty’s Craft Brewery in Goleta

Three Westmont College graduates have gone into the beer-brewing business together, with plans to soon open Captain Fatty’s Craft Brewery in Goleta.

The young men hope to tentatively open a production facility and tap room in a warehouse at 6483 Calle Real, Unit D, by Nov. 1, according to co-founder and head brewer Preston Angell, who graduated with a biology degree from Westmont in 2009. more

Open up Their Arts

Former film executive Michael Gifford and his wife, Nancy, a curator at the Arts Fund, opened the doors of their Montecito home for a private reception for members of the Arts Council for the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art. more
