Monthly Public Telescope Night

Westmont Public Telescope Night. See cool stuff in the night sky through
telescopes set up by the Astronomical Unit, the local amateur astronomy
club sponsored by the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. Most
months the large telescope at the observatory is also available for viewing,
run by the Physics Department at Westmont. Observations are weather
permitting, are held on the third Friday of each month, and are free to the
public. The observatory is next to the baseball field. more

BizHawk: Westmont Graduates Opening Captain Fatty’s Craft Brewery in Goleta

Three Westmont College graduates have gone into the beer-brewing business together, with plans to soon open Captain Fatty’s Craft Brewery in Goleta.

The young men hope to tentatively open a production facility and tap room in a warehouse at 6483 Calle Real, Unit D, by Nov. 1, according to co-founder and head brewer Preston Angell, who graduated with a biology degree from Westmont in 2009. more

Former film executive Michael Gifford and his wife, Nancy, a curator at the Arts Fund, opened the doors of their Montecito home for a private reception for members of the Arts Council for the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art. more

LOCAL ROUNDUP: No. 2 Warriors fall at home

Natasha Coyle recorded a hat trick and Katie Farris added two more goals to lead the 15th-ranked The Master’s women’s soccer team to a 5-0 Golden Stat Athletic Conference upset over No. 2 Westmont College at Thorrington Field on Saturday. more

Warriors finish in draw

Despite dominating on offense and recording its third shutout in a row, the Westmont men’s soccer team was only able to muster a 0-0 draw in its Golden State Athletic Conference match with The Master’s at Thorrington Field on Saturday. Led by San Marcos High alum Cody Howen, the Warriors (5-2-1, 2-0-1) outshot the Mustangs 21-14, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on frame. A stout back line, anchored by goalkeeper Josh Glover, gave Westmont its fifth shutout of the season. more

The “Gun Your Engines Gala” was the opening event of the Montecito Motor Classic weekend. Held at the Montecito Country Club, it was full-speed ahead with a fresh vibe, new faces and an unbeatable enthusiasm.  … Ruth Fuentes, a poised young lady, told her story that underscores the value of the Police Activity League (PAL) in providing teens an alternative to gangs and street life. She thrived in PAL’s environment, which offers training and leadership opportunities, and now attends Westmont through scholarships. more

Your Westmont: New Students Arrive for Orientation

Orientation begins Thursday, August 28, for the 379 first-year students representing the class of 2018, and classes start Monday, September 1. The incoming class, which includes two National Merit Scholars, represents 29 states and eight foreign countries. more

National Chemistry Week poetry contest

TV Santa Barbara

TV Santa Barbara (TVSB) is Santa Barbara’s non-profit 501(c)3 media arts center, helping everyday people to create, connect and communicate through media featuring their local community. TV Santa Barbara provides access to local TV services, educational seminars, and state-of-the art media production equipment to empower the Santa Barbara community. Santa Barbara area nonprofits, businesses and individuals use TVSB to produce television programs, website and promotional videos, and public service announcements. TVSB distributes programming both online and through two community media channels, TVSB Voice (local public access TV on Santa Barbara Cox Cable Channel 17/103.17) and TVSB Culture (educational access TV on Santa Barbara Cox Cable Channel 71/104.21). … Other educational institutions that have used the channel include Fielding Graduate University, SBCC Scheinfeld Center, SBCC Construction Technology Department, Westmont, Stanford University Nonprofit Management Institute, and Santa Barbara High School. more
