Love of the game drives San Bruno’s Burns

It was an evening like no other for San Bruno Joe DiMaggio pitcher Kyle Burns. The right-hander’s two-hit shutout — leading San Bruno to an 8-0 win over the San Francisco Barbarians Wednesday at Lara Field — was almost an aside from his career night at the plate. In four plate appearances, Burns reached base four times, going 2 for 2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored. … As a senior, Burns did not try out for the Padres, but instead took a baseball operations role as the team’s statistician. Currently, the right-hander is gearing up for a tryout at the collegiate level. He will be attending Westmont College in the fall and is hoping to crack the roster with the NAIA powerhouse Warriors. more

Sports: Peak Performances S.B. Track Club Stars Score Big in National Track & Field Championships

Josh Priester had such faith in Barbara Nwaba’s potential in the heptathlon that he quit his job as associate director of track and field at UCSB and launched a nonprofit program to train post-graduate female athletes, the focal trainee being Nwaba. It was called the Women’s Athletic Performance Foundation (WAPF). … Nwaba welcomed the change. Tom FitzSimons, a decathlete from Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland, joined the club. “Having guys train with us is a good thing,” Nwaba said. “Tom and I ran a lot of hills here [above the club’s training track at Westmont College] to get ready for the season.” more

Pope Francis meets US televangelists, and the first-ever ‘papal high-five’ follows

What does it take to produce the first-ever papal high-five? A meeting with American televangelists, apparently. The gesture came during a three-hour meeting of Pope Francis and Texas televangelists Kenneth Copeland and James Robison, just weeks after the pontiff met with televangelist Joel Osteen and other religious leaders. At the June 24 meeting, Robison said he was so moved by Pope Francis’ message of the Gospel that he asked the translator to ask Francis for a high-five. The pope obliged, raised his arm and the two men smacked hands. … Osteen’s meeting with Francis on June 4 was part of a larger gathering coordinated by the International Foundation, also known as “the Fellowship.” Osteen was joined by Utah Sen. Mike Lee, a Mormon; California pastor Tim Timmons; and Gayle D. Beebe, president of evangelical Westmont College. more

Brewers complete second workout at Westmont

It was a second day of workouts for the Milwaukee Brewers Area Code Team at Westmont College (Montecito, Calif.), where 90 additional players from Southern California headed up the coast for a shot at the final tryout next week. In total 191 players worked out for approximately 90 spots next week at USC. It is from that workout that the final team will be decided upon. more

Brewers start workouts at Westmont

The Milwaukee Brewers started the first of two workouts at Westmont College (Montecito, Calif.) on Monday with 100 players from, predominantly, the northern half of Southern California. more

Lompoc Civic Auditorium to host musical “Hairspray Jr.”

Hairdos and excitement will be on the rise during this summer’s musical production of “Hairspray Jr.,” which will be presented by the Lompoc Youth Theater and the city of Lompoc’s recreation division. The family-friendly show will be performed at the Lompoc Civic auditorium on July 11, 12, 18, and 19 at 7 p.m. each night. There will be a pair of matinee performances on Saturday, July 12, and Saturday, July 19, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students, but there will be an early-bird discount of $2 for tickets purchased before July 10. … Choreography will be supplied by Broadway veteran Gioia Marchese and Rebecca Jones, the choreographer/director at Cabrillo High School. Miller James, who has been on the artistic team at Opera Santa Barbara, Westmont College Theatre and Ensemble Theatre, will be designing the costumes. more

Thousands attend 4th of July Celebrations in Santa Barbara

Santa Ynez’s Dickey named Coach of the Year

Warren Dickey thought he had it all figured out. But soon enough, after a couple humbling situations, Dickey discovered that he didn’t know nearly as much as he thought he did. In 2014, though, Dickey does, indeed, got this coaching thing down pat. … Dickey has been coaching at various levels for 26 years. He played under Fred Warrecker at Santa Barbara High School. He then played at Westmont College and then in the minor leagues for two seasons before deciding to get into coaching. more

ALUMNI: Woodcrest grad enjoys record-setting performance

As a senior at the tiny Riverside Woodcrest Christian school in the spring of 2013, Becky Collier talked about her dream of one day competing in the Olympics. A year later, Collier, who just completed her freshman year at Westmont College, continues headlong toward that goal. more
