Perhaps during a recent take-off or landing in your private jet, you might have glanced out the window and noticed how ‘golden’ our region has become.  Unfortunately, this time  California gold doesn’t refer to rocks along the riverbeds, but rather the dried and parched hillsides throughout our State. … When a private home with a part-time owner uses more water each month than the entire Four Seasons Biltmore hotel in high season and almost double that of Westmont College, we have what I might call an ‘issue.’ more

Angels draft former Lincoln baseball player

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim selected Westmont College’s Brandon Gildea, a former Lincoln High standout, in the 36th round of Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft last weekend. “I am extremely proud of Brandon for this tremendous accomplishment,” said Westmont head coach Robert Ruiz, who played Gildea primarily as a catcher, but also at third base and pitcher. “He has been a four-year contributor in our program and has improved each year. His humility, work ethic and leadership should provide a great foundation for the next steps in his baseball career.” more

Pope meets with US Protestant delegation

Pope Francis received a delegation of 15 US Protestants and Mormons at the Vatican on June 5. Westmont College President Gayle Beebe wrote, “The Pope invited the Protestant leaders to discuss the question: ‘Can we find common ground in order to advance the life and ministry of Jesus so more people can experience the joy of Christian faith?’” more

NEWS: World’s Top Polo Players Coming To Scottsdale In October; Tickets On Sale For USA’s Biggest Event

The first and second times were thrilling.  The third time was a charm.  The fourth time is shaping up to be the best yet. Sunday’s action will showcase Julio Arellano, the top polo players in the U.S. and Patrick Uretz of Westmont College in Santa Barbara, the top college polo player in the country. more

2014 USA Men’s U18 National Team Training Camp set to begin today

A total of 24 of the country’s top 18-and-unders who accepted invitations to participate in the 2014 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team training camp, will arrive on Tuesday to the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in hopes of making the 12-member USA U18 National Team roster. Headlining the group of invitees set to participate in training camp is a trio of high school seniors who each have two gold medals playing internationally for USA Basketball: Stanley Johnson (Mater Dei H.S./Fullerton, Calif.), Tyus Jones (Apple Valley H.S./Apple Valley, Minn.) and Justise Winslow (St. John’s School/Houston, Texas). In addition, eight others have at least attended a USA Basketball camp. … Joining Donovan on the sideline as USA assistant coaches are collegiate head coaches Ed Cooley of Providence College and Sean Miller of the University of Arizona. Furthermore, Danny Manning (Wake Forest University), John Moore (Westmont College) and Steve Schmidt (Mott Community College) will serve as training camp court coaches, and will assist from June 10-12. more

Healdsburg High School student earns spot in prestigious science program

A Healdsburg High School junior has snagged a spot in the prestigious Summer Science Program, marking the fourth time in eight years a Hound has made the grade and gained admission. Juan Carlos Garcia will head to New Mexico Tech in Socorro for nearly six weeks this summer to work among 35 other high schoolers on a single astronomy-based problem. An additional 36 students will go through a similar program at Westmont College in Santa Barbara through the Summer Science Program. more
