Chico State track and field decathlete J. Patrick Smith won the Sam Adams multi-events decathlon at Westmont College in Santa Barbara on Saturday. Smith scored 7,351 points, the eighth-best mark by a collegiate athlete this year. more

The Carlsbad Elite Players’ Edge On The Field And Off

The Carlsbad Elite Program has shown its success both on the field and in the highly competitive area of college recruiting. Recently program graduates have committed to programs at UCLA, Washington, Colorado, Boston University, Cornell, Brown, University of San Francisco, Westmont, Cal Baptist, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly Pomona, University of the Pacific, San Diego State, USD, and Nevada, among others. In 2013 alone, nearly 40 players on the U16 through U18 teams received athletic scholarships. – more

Lunar eclipse viewing offered

A free public viewing of the next total lunar eclipse is offered by the Westmont Observatory and the Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit from 10:30 p.m. April 14 to 2 a.m. April 15.

“This should be a fun event, gazing at the spooky, coppery moon at totality through Westmont’s 8-inch refractor telescope,” said Thomas Whittemore, Westmont physics instructor. more

ISS and Total Lunar Eclipse

Some good news about the total lunar eclipse on the night of Mon/Tue, April 14/15. Westmont College will open up their Observatory for public viewing, from 10:30 PM to 2 AM. Smaller telescopes set up by the Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit will also be set up to view the eclipse, Mars (at its closest for this year that evening), and Saturn. The Westmont Observatory is adjacent to their baseball and athletic fields, on the downhill side of the campus, with parking available nearby. more

Williams women’s lacrosse wins; men’s tennis falls in California

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Ephs finished their spring trip west with a 7-2 loss to Westmont College.

Williams freshman Rohan Shastri, last year’s All-Eagle boys tennis MVP for Mount Greylock, accounted for both points for the Ephs (7-2). He teamed with Jose Raventos for an 8-6 doubles win over Travis Kinsey and Nicholas Szyndlar, then earned a 6-2, 6-0 singles win over Tommy Nightingale. more

Granada Theatre Celebrates 90 Years Since First Opening Its Doors in Santa Barbara

Beginning last Wednesday and for the two weeks leading up to April 9, participating stores are designing 1920s-themed storefront window displays for the public to enjoy. Displays will include a showcase of vintage dresses and costumes generously on loan from Renaissance Boutique, UCSB, SBCC and Westmont Theater  Departments. They will be on display two weeks prior to the 90th anniversary in the store windows of local retail stores such as Bella Rosa Galleries, Bryant & Sons, Ltd., Chicken Little, Diani, Granada Books, Nordstrom, Metropolitan Showroom and Boutique, Renaissance Fine Consignment, Saks Fifth Avenue, Sullivan Goss, Swarovski and Wendy Foster. more
