Flu season off to a slow start in county

he 2014-15 flu season is off to a calm start, with minimal flu-related symptoms seen around the county in recent weeks. But there are still months to go before the season ends.

Of the 1,582 patients who went to Santa Barbara County Public Health Centers around the county over the last two weeks or sought care at Westmont College or Cate School, 42, or 2.6 percent, showed flu-like symptoms. more

‘Orange is the New Black’ Inspiration to Visit UCSB

UCSB Reads will bring Piper Kerman, author of the novel that inspired the Netflix Series “Orange is the New Black”, to campus during Spring quarter this year. … Metzger said the library’s search committee — composed of professors from the university, Santa Barbara City College and Westmont College — held meetings throughout the summer before finally deciding to host Kerman. Metzger also said the program needs more students to serve on the committee responsible for choosing an author. more

Ray Callaway: International UM ecologist nominated as regents professor

The greenhouse sits 10 steps from Ray Callaway’s office, a fitting location for a professor of biological sciences. Cacti and tropical foliage thrive despite the subzero weather pressing in beyond the glass. … Callaway was born in Alaska but moved to California at a young age. He earned his undergraduate degree at Westmont College, where he found inspiration through Frank Percival, his professor at the time. more

MBK: Westmont falls short against San Bernardino

Five players scored in double figures for the Westmont men’s basketball team but it still wasn’t enough against a solid Cal State San Bernardino team as the Warriors fell 81-77 on Saturday night.

“Tonight we played the CCAA Champions from last year– one of the top Division II programs here in California,” Westmont coach John Moore said. “They have won the CCAA Championship nine of the last thirteen years. So, next to Cal Poly Pomona, they will be one of the top teams in CCAA this year.” more
