Gamble pays off for Westmont in GSAC

Westmont baseball coach Robert Ruiz rolled the dice. And it worked. The Warriors opened the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament with a 2-1 win over Concordia on Thursday at The Master’s College in Santa Clarita. Ruiz gamble was going with Alex Bush on the mound. Bush, the conference’s Player of the Year as a first baseman who hit .397 with eight home runs and 35 runs batted in during the regular season, tossed 82/3 innings, during which he allowed one run on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks. With a pitching staff consisting of three outstanding starters in Russell Harmening, Daniel Butler and Andrew Vasquez, Ruiz said his decision to start Bush had to do with timing more than anything else. more
