Oman Arena hosting Rotary Classic Invitational

High profile NAIA women’s basketball is returning to Oman Arena next month… The other 11 invited teams along with Bethel, FHU and Vanguard are Cumberland University (Tenn.), Westmont College (Calif.), University of Great Falls (Mont.), Carroll College (Mont.), Montana State University, Campbellsville (Ky.), Columbia University (Mo.), John Brown University (Ark.), Talladega College (Ala.), Our Lady of the Lake College (Texas) and Mid-America Nazarene (Kan.). more

Tips for creating an active learning environment for STEM disciplines

October 25 is National Active Learning Day, and around the country a coordinated effort is underway to boost the understanding and use of this learning method, especially in STEM courses. In honor of this nationwide effort, I chatted with Dr. Nivaldo Tro, professor of Chemistry at Westmont College, about his use of active learning to glean from his expertise. more

SBARTL: DP’s O’Leary gearing up for a big night

Dos Pueblos High’s O’Leary Stadium will be busy on Friday with the school’s 50th anniversary ceremony, a homecoming, and a cross-town football game against rival Santa Barbara… Westmont College won a pair of matches last week to improve its record to 25-0 and earn Female Athlete of the Week honors for Libby Dahlberg. Coach Patti Cook accepted the award, noting that Dahlberg was busy taking a quiz in physiology and then an exam in biology. more 

LOCAL ROUNDUP: SBCC reels in Hancock in wild finish

The SBCC football team found itself trailing Central Coast rival Hancock by three scores midway through the third quarter of Saturday’s American Pacific League game… Hope International (10-0-4, 2-0-1) opened the scoring when Thales Serra converted on a spot kick in the 28th minute, only to have Augie Andrade equalize for Westmont (7-4-1, 4-0-2) with a penalty in the 62nd minute. more

Westmont College on Saturday honored the late William S. “Bill” Klug and Angie Hill as Alumnus and Alumna of the Year during Homecoming weekend. more

LOCAL ROUNDUP: Vaqueros run wild in WSC victory

The southern Warriors had a tough go of things at Murchison Gym aginst the Rocklin-based Warriors, coming away with a 25-16, 25-16, 23-25, 25-16 Golden State Athletic Conference win… Libby Dahlberg led Westmont (24-0, 9-0) with 16 kills, while Jessica McCann had 10 kills. Taylor Beckman and Samantha Neely had nine kills each in the win, and Mila Maricic had eight kills. more 

IN CONCERT: Ode to a Musical Monument, and a New Season

The Symphony is back in town. Lest there be any question about that, note the big, bold, Beethoven-ian opening splash at The Granada Theatre this weekend, as the Santa Barbara Symphony kicks off its 64th season. Joining the orchestral forces, with maestro Nir Kabaretti now entering his 11th season at the helm, is a wealth of voices to amp up the “Ode to Joy” component of the masterwork – a massive choral conglomerate made up of the Santa Barbara Choral Society, Quire of Voyces, and choirs from Westmont, UCSB and San Marcos High School. more

Tony Chez, Formerly of Santa Barbara, 1940-2016

Robert Anthony Chez “Tony” beloved father, grandfather and friend died peacefully at home in Houston, Texas, on Oct. 10, 2016, at the age of 75. He died from complications of multiple sclerosis… Tony also announced Santa Barbara City College football games and Westmont College basketball games. more

Mets release 19 minor league players

After re-signing left-handed pitcher Alberto Baldonado and outfielder Victor Cruzado at the end of September, the Mets have released a bevy of minor league players:… A .347/.429/.499 hitter at Westmont College, Will Barring went undrafted and was signed by the Mets in 2015. He struggled in his debut with the GCL Mets, and although he displayed a decent eye at the plate in 2016 with Kingsport, did not have much more success. more
