Cochrum reflects on past teaching experiences

A few years ago, one of science teacher Lisa Cochrum’s students approached her in April with shocking news — he would be moving to Denver for the remainder of the school year. His father, Mike Nolan, the former coach of the San Francisco 49ers, had been hired by the Denver Broncos to become the team’s  new defensive coordinator. …Wanting to free herself from the constricted environment she felt during high school, Cochrum started to work in 1992 as a student teacher at an elementary school in San Leandro following her graduation from Westmont College in Santa Barbara. more

Kirsten Moore Named USA Women’s Basketball Coach

USA Basketball has announced that Westmont head coach Kirsten Moore has been appointed as one of two court coaches for the USA Women’s Basketball U18 National Team Trials. Moore will serve alongside Temple University coach Tonya Cardoza.

The trials features 30 athletes and will take place from May 28-30 at the United State Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Participants will compete for 12 roster spots on the USA U18 National Team, which will play in the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women from July 13-17 in Valdivia, Chile. more

Westmont Men’s Soccer Adds Nine Recruits

Westmont Men’s Soccer head coach Dave Wolf has announced the signing of nine recruits who will join the Warriors for the 2016 season. The incoming group, which consists of one transfer and eight freshmen, includes players from Oregon, Minnesota, Ohio and California.

“This is a large, exciting, attacking oriented class that will complement the pieces that we already have on our roster,” said coach Dave Wolf. “This class will be very dangerous in the attacking third.  Stylistically, each player is technical, hardworking on both sides of the ball, and plays the game with passion.  more

Carpinteria Announces New Basketball Coaches

Carpinteria High School proudly announced that it has filled vacancies atop the boys’ and girls’ basketball programs. Jon Wyers will take the helm of the boys’ program while Amy Bryant will step up to lead the Lady Warriors. …Bryant is a teacher at CHS in the social studies department and coordinates a flagship college and career readiness program titled, “Get focused, stay focused.”  Bryant played basketball at Scotts Valley High in Santa Cruz and is a product of Westmont College where she was actively involved in athletics programs. more

Consequences of Plagiarism in College

Plagiarism includes both intentional and unintentional copying of another person’s creative work. College students face risks of plagiarizing when they prepare researched reports and papers for classes. Copying statements, paragraphs or entire documents, or largely utilizing the words and phrases of another document without proper citation, are common examples of college plagiarism. … For example, Westmont College includes three levels of plagiarism in its policy: minimal, substantial and complete. Grace Christian runner overcomes life-threatening hurdle, qualifies for state

The state high school track and field entries were released Sunday, and Grace Christian’s Sarah Newton is on the list. She will compete in the 400-meter race and join three others in the 4×400-meter relay. …Newton overcame yet again, and came back stronger. She’s signed to play college soccer at Westmont College in California, graduated from Grace as class valedictorian, and even though school is out she will be representing Grace Christian at the state track and field competition May 27-28. more

Darrell Moody: Reid qualifies for nationals in decathlon

Corey Reid made a name for himself as one of the best and versatile track performers in recent history at Carson High, and he hasn’t missed a beat at the four-year-level. …Reid qualified for the prestigious event May 13-14 at Westmont College, racking up 6,992 points. He’s one of 13 APU athletes making the trip to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and he’s ranked in the top 10 nationally. more
