Hibbert, Snyder highlight signing ceremony at Frontier

Ben Hibbert stood at the podium in front of about 500 Frontier students, coaches, faculty members and family and took one look at his grandparents. That’s when the tears showed up. Hibbert, joining four other Frontier senior student-athletes signing with college athletic programs, signed a letter of intent to Cal State Northridge on Thursday in the Frontier gym. …Kevin Verdujo signed to swim at Niagara University in New York, Jared Harris signed to run track at Westmont College in Santa Barbara and Lindsey Relerford will cheer for Grand Canyon University in Phoenix on scholarship. more

AmeriFlex Financial Services has announced the appointment of Hannah Buschbom, CFP, CDFATM, as partner. …Buschbom received a bachelor’s degree from Westmont College in economics and business with a focus in accounting. Her additional accomplishments include the designation of Certified Divorce Financial Analyst Designation (CDFATM) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP). more

Athletic Round Table : Head of the Class: Trio honored as area’s top coaches

Two college baseball coaches who have elevated their teams into the national rankings, and a prep basketball coach who took Santa Barbara High to a CIF-Southern Section championship, were honored on Wednesday as the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Coaches of the Year.

UCSB’s Andrew Checketts and Westmont’s Robert Ruiz received the collegiate award, while Dave Bregante of Santa Barbara High took home the prep honor in a ceremony held at the Lobero Theater. more

Warriors lose argument and 1-0 thriller to The Master’s in NAIA baseball

Westmont College’s Michael Frigon leaped has high as he could, but an umpire’s call left the Warriors high and dry in Wednesday’s winner’s bracket semifinals of the NAIA National Opening Round Baseball Tournament at Russ Carr Field.

Frigon was called out at home plate on Jarrett Costa’s double despite apparently leaping over The Master’s catcher in the eighth inning of a controversial 1-0 loss to the Mustangs. more

Bethany men fall 5-4 at nationals

The Bethany College men’s tennis team got off to a quick start against Westmont College at the NAIA Men’s Tennis National Tournament. However, it was not enough to hold off the 14 seed as Westmont came storming back to win 5-4, and to end the season for Bethany.

Manuel Raga and Juan Mateus started things off with a thumping of the Westmont No. one doubles team. They took the point by an 8-2 score. more

Santa Barbara High Teacher Tina Hill Competes for SBCC Swim Team

Tina Hill is one busy body. When she’s not training and competing for the SBCC women’s swim team, she’s teaching math at Santa Barbara High and working as an assistant coach for the high school swim teams. …The seventh-ranked Warriors are in the running to be a host site for the opening round of the NAIA National Tournament. After going 4-0 last week, coach Robert Ruiz said the Warriors (35-7) are one game ahead of the team they’re contending with to be a host. more

Eli Wopat of Dos Pueblos, San Marcos’ Paige Hauschild honored as Athletes of the Week

Paige Hauschild of the San Marcos swim team and Dos Pueblos volleyball standout Eli Wopat were named the Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon. …The athletes receiving honorable mention accolades were Jess Liou (Cate girls lacrosse), Mackenzie Brokaw (UCSB water polo), Chance Wright (Carpinteria boys track), Henry Farrell (Laguna Blanca volleyball), Austin Bush (Westmont baseball), Bennett Reichard (San Marcos golf),  Ryan Guardino (San Marcos baseball) and Shane Bieber (UCSB baseball). more

Prep, College Athletes of the Year Named at Round Table Night of Athletes at Lobero

Dave Bregante was named Coach of the Year and senior forward Bolden Brace was honored as the High School Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Baseball coaches Robert Ruiz of Westmont and UCSB’s Andrew Checketts shared the College Coach of the Year honor. Ruiz guided Westmont to the GSAC regular season and tournament and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round, which it is hosting for the first time. The Warriors have won a school-record 42 wins this season, beating last year’s mark of 41. more

NAIA BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP: Warriors pounce on big second chance

A week after its biggest stumble of the year, Westmont College got a clean re-start to its baseball postseason on Tuesday.

Pitcher Daniel Butler retired William Carey University’s first 16 batters and the Warriors scored four runs before making their first out en route to a 14-1 victory over the Crusaders in an NAIA National Championship Tournament opener at Russ Carr Field. more

Doubling Demeters delight DP

DP is more than just the oft-used acronym for Dos Pueblos High. It’s also the baseball play that the school has been getting straight from the DNA of brothers Dustin and Davey Demeter. …They haven’t played much Whiffle Ball since their oldest cousin, Luke Coffey, graduated from DP last year to continue his baseball career at Westmont College. He’s busy with the playoffs this week, as well, with the Warriors playing host to one of NAIA’s regional tournaments. more
