Two college baseball coaches who have elevated their teams into the national rankings, and a prep basketball coach who took Santa Barbara High to a CIF-Southern Section championship, were honored on Wednesday as the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Coaches of the Year.
UCSB’s Andrew Checketts and Westmont’s Robert Ruiz received the collegiate award, while Dave Bregante of Santa Barbara High took home the prep honor in a ceremony held at the Lobero Theater. more

Westmont College’s Michael Frigon leaped has high as he could, but an umpire’s call left the Warriors high and dry in Wednesday’s winner’s bracket semifinals of the NAIA National Opening Round Baseball Tournament at Russ Carr Field.
Frigon was called out at home plate on Jarrett Costa’s double despite apparently leaping over The Master’s catcher in the eighth inning of a controversial 1-0 loss to the Mustangs. more
Bethany men fall 5-4 at nationals

The Bethany College men’s tennis team got off to a quick start against Westmont College at the NAIA Men’s Tennis National Tournament. However, it was not enough to hold off the 14 seed as Westmont came storming back to win 5-4, and to end the season for Bethany.
Manuel Raga and Juan Mateus started things off with a thumping of the Westmont No. one doubles team. They took the point by an 8-2 score. more
Santa Barbara High Teacher Tina Hill Competes for SBCC Swim Team

Tina Hill is one busy body. When she’s not training and competing for the SBCC women’s swim team, she’s teaching math at Santa Barbara High and working as an assistant coach for the high school swim teams. …The seventh-ranked Warriors are in the running to be a host site for the opening round of the NAIA National Tournament. After going 4-0 last week, coach Robert Ruiz said the Warriors (35-7) are one game ahead of the team they’re contending with to be a host. more

Dave Bregante was named Coach of the Year and senior forward Bolden Brace was honored as the High School Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
Baseball coaches Robert Ruiz of Westmont and UCSB’s Andrew Checketts shared the College Coach of the Year honor. Ruiz guided Westmont to the GSAC regular season and tournament and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round, which it is hosting for the first time. The Warriors have won a school-record 42 wins this season, beating last year’s mark of 41. more

Pitcher Daniel Butler retired William Carey University’s first 16 batters and the Warriors scored four runs before making their first out en route to a 14-1 victory over the Crusaders in an NAIA National Championship Tournament opener at Russ Carr Field. more
Doubling Demeters delight DP

DP is more than just the oft-used acronym for Dos Pueblos High. It’s also the baseball play that the school has been getting straight from the DNA of brothers Dustin and Davey Demeter. …They haven’t played much Whiffle Ball since their oldest cousin, Luke Coffey, graduated from DP last year to continue his baseball career at Westmont College. He’s busy with the playoffs this week, as well, with the Warriors playing host to one of NAIA’s regional tournaments. more
