Westmont Routs William Carey in NAIA Opening Round Tournament

Westmont ace Daniel Butler retired the first 16 batters he faced and Jarrett Costa drove in six runs, as the Warriors rolled to a 14-1 win over William Carey of Mississippi on the first day of the NAIA Baseball Opening Round Tournament at Russ Carr Field on Tuesday.

Butler won his program record-tying 12th win of the season agaisnt one loss.  The right-handed junior threw 116 pitches over eight innings, allowing one unearned run and four hits. He struck out five and did not surrender a walk. more

Conner Menez hurled a complete-game five-hitter and Pearson Good slugged a three-run homer to lead The Master’s College past Madonna of Michigan, 7-1, on the opening day of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. …Now, the Mustangs turn their attention to Westmont, the Opening Round’s host and top-seeded team. The Warriors won the GSAC’s regular-season championship but were eliminated in the conference tournament, won by the Mustangs. more

Westmont College, ranked No. 7 in NAIA baseball, gets a do-over in hosting a post-season tournament when it opens NAIA Championship play today at its own Russ Carr Field. The Warriors, who lost their two games at last week’s Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament at Westmont, will host three teams from out of state as well as a fellow GSAC member The Master’s College in the NAIA Opening Round Series. more

Westmont completed a three-game sweep of Hope International by taking both ends of a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Russ Carr Field.

Alex Bush produced a bases-loaded walk-off single in the ninth inning of the opener to give Westmont a 4-3 win. In the nightcap, the Warriors rallied with three runs in the fifth inning to claim a 3-1 victory. more

After two years of feeling uncertain about her career path, she found herself in Santa Barbara City College’s Career Center, looking into the nursing program. more

When 24-year-old Angie Gunner graduated from Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, she returned to the Central Valley with more than a diploma. …In 2007, Hillery graduated from Buchanan and moved to Santa Barbara to study at Westmont College. The private liberal arts college gave Hillery a chance to broaden her horizons. more

Eight Years After the Devastating Tea Fire, Many Have Yet to Rebuild Lost Homes

The fire burned 210 homes in Montecito, a community that stretches across city and county lines.  County planners said about 31 percent of the homes in its jurisdiction have not been rebuilt. Santa Barbara City planners said about 20 percent of the homes have not been rebuilt, although some are in the midst of making a comeback. …Westmont Physics professor Ken Kihlstrom lost more than most.  The fire burned his office on campus and his nearby home, while he and his wife were leading a semester abroad. Kihlstrom said he remembers friends calling him to say they could see his home burning on KEYT. more
