Westmont College Caps Commencement Weekend with Graduation for Class of 2016

Nearly 300 Westmont College graduates donned their caps and gowns for Saturday morning’s commencement ceremony at Russell Carr Field. Henry “Fritz” Schaeffer III, a computational and theoretical chemist, was this year’s commencement speaker. Schaeffer has a doctorate in chemical physics from Stanford University and is an author of several books on science and faith. He currently heads the Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry at the University of Georgia. more

ALL-USA Coach of the Year steps down at Chino Hills

Chino Hills boys basketball coach Steve Baik, whose team won the California Open Division state title and finished the season at 35-0 and as the No. 1 team in the Super 25 rankings, has stepped down. His coaching record with the Huskies was 151-37. …Baik began coaching in 2001 as an assistant at Hercules (Calif.) He became a head coach for the first time at John Muir (Pasadena) and has been the head coach at Chino Hills since 2010. He was a point guard at Arcadia (Calif.) and at Westmont College and played professionally in Korea. more

Westmont’s Lauren Stratman, Kendyll McManigal Receive GSAC’s Top Tennis Awards

Westmont senior Lauren Stratman was named the GSAC Women’s Tennis Player of the year for the third year in a row and honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as an NAIA Regional Award Winner for Senior Player of the Year. Head coach Kendyll McManigal was honored as the GSAC Coach of the Year. She led the Warriors to the GSAC regular season and tournament titles in her third year at the helm. more

Westmont to Break Ground on New Facilities

Westmont College will break ground on new facilities for the college’s Global Leadership Center at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2016, at the construction site, east of Van Kampen Hall. The ceremony is open to the public. more

SBCARTL: Checketts hopes he can live up to his award

UCSB baseball coach Andrew Checketts wasn’t ready to deliver an acceptance speech when he was introduced as the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s College Co-Coach of the Year during its press luncheon on Monday. …Westmont College’s Robert Ruiz, the other Round Table College Co-Coach of the Year, has already tied the school record for most wins in a season with a record of 41-9. more

Game of the Week 5/9-5/12

Westmont College earned the right to host this tournament after winning the regular-season championship while compiling the best record in school history (41-9 overall, 25-5 in the GSAC). The Warriors’ opening-round game will be at 3 p.m. Monday against the winner of a 9 a.m. game between Menlo and Biola. more

Pressure Is On After UCSB’s Andrew Checketts Earns Share of Coach’s Award

Cara Gamberdella, the president of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table, made an early announcement when she revealed the SBART College Coaches of the Year during Monday’s weekly press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Café. …This year’s winners are Andrew Checketts and Robert Ruiz, the baseball coaches at UCSB and Westmont, respectively. UCSB is 29-10-1 and ranked 16th in the nation while Ruiz’s Warriors are 41-9 and ranked No. 6 in the NAIA. more

Hunter Clark, Samantha Murphy Honored as Athletes of the Week

A runner and a scorer were selected as Athletes of the Week on Monday during the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Café. Hunter Clark, a middle distance runner at Dos Pueblos High, is the male recipient of the award  and UCSB water polo player Samantha Hunter won the female honor. …The athletes who were honorable mention choices for this week’s awards include Anders Holm (UCSB men’s tennis), Steven Ledesma (SBCC baseball), Luke Coffey (Westmont baseball), Bennett Reichard (San Marcos golf), Maya Nelson (SBCC track & field) and the doubles team of Stefani Stojic and Palina Dubavets (UCSB tennis). more

TMC Insider: Men’s golf nabs second straight GSAC title

The Master’s College golf team won the Golden State Athletic Conference title at the 2016 GSAC Tournament, while TMC track & field amassed a collective 11 all-conference titles. …The men’s track & field program made an impressive showing at the 2016 GSAC Championships at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. more

Art Without Limits to Present Professional Dance Panel With Christopher Pilafian, Christina Sanchez

Dance artist, choreographer, educator, visual artist and artistic director ofSanta Barbara Dance Theater, Christopher Pilafian, will be joined by Christina Sanchez and a panel of professional dancers from a variety of genres to give words of wisdom for those who are embarking on careers as dancers from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at Art From Scrap Gallery. …Sanchez is currently a member of UCSB’s Santa Barbara Dance Theater under Pilafian’s direction. She also teaches modern dance technique at Westmont College and at UCSB.  more
