This Week in Local Sports

It’s a week of postseason action. On Wednesday, the Dos Pueblos boys water polo team plays Servite in the CIF-SS Division 3 semifinals at the Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine. In soccer, the Westmont men’s and women’s teams play in the semifinals of the GSAC Tournament. The women play The Master’s on Wednesday at Vanguard while the men host the tournament and also play The Master’s on Thursday at 2 p.m. more

LOCAL ROUNDUP: Warriors finish perfect in GSAC

The sixth-ranked Westmont women’s volleyball team finished off a perfect Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season schedule on Saturday with a 16-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19 victory over Menlo College at Murchison Gym, extending the Warriors’ win streak to 30 straight. Like their GSAC win over William Jessup on Friday night, four attackers had double-digit kills for Westmont (30-3, 14-0), led by senior Taylor Beckman’s 17-kill effort. more

Westmont Goes Unbeaten in GSAC Volleyball for 2nd Straight Year

For the second year in a row, Westmont Volleyball finished the Golden State Athletic Conference regular season undefeated. With a 3-1 win over Menlo on Saturday afternoon, the NAIA sixth-ranked Warriors concluded the regular season with a record of 30-3 overall and 14-0 in GSAC play. The Warriors now have a 30-match conference winning streak. more

Second-Half Defense is Difference in Westmont Basketball Win

Westmont Men’s Basketball defeated Occidental by a score of 69-62 on Saturday in Los Angeles. It was a second half defensive effort that ended up being the difference for the Warriors. Occidental came out of the gate shooting extremely well. In the first half, they shot 58.6 percent from the floor and led by as much as seven. The score at halftime was 38-33 in favor of Occidental. more

Freshmen Lead the Way for Westmont Women in 86-44 Rout

Red-shirt freshman Madison Kast had a near perfect shooting night and tallied 19 points while true freshman Cassidy Tiegs tacked on 18 more, leading NAIA seventh-ranked Westmont to an 86-44 rout over Multnomah in a nonconference women’s basketball game on Saturday in Portland, Ore. more

Westmont’s Michael Oldach Wins GSAC Cross Country Title

Sophomore Michael Oldach became just the second Westmont men’s cross country runner to win the GSAC Individual Championship. On a drizzly morning, Oldach completed the 8,000-meter race in a time of 24:39.7 to claim first place. more

LOCAL ROUNDUP: SBCC blasts way to WSC crown

The third-ranked SBCC men’s soccer team scored three goals in the first 24 minutes to square away a 4-1 victory over L.A. Mission to clinch the Wesern State Conference North Division titleat La Playa Stadium, helped by Oxnard’s 2-1 victory over Santa Monica earlier in the day. … Cassidy Rea led a balanced attack with 10 kills for Westmont in a 25-21, 25-17, 25-15 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over the Rocklin-based Warriors. Rea was the lone player in double figures in kills, but four other Warriors — Emma Harrah, Libby Dahlberg, Taylor Beckman and Samantha Neely — had seven kills each. more

LOCAL ROUNDUP: Royals boys claim Channel crown

The San Marcos boys cross country squad may not have scored the individual victory at Thursdsay’s Channel League Finals, but took a much bigger prize in a league title, the school’s first since the mid-1990s. … Maud Ranger hit four 3-pointers to add 17 points in the win for Westmont (1-0), while Lauren McCoy had 10 points and nine rebounds. Westmont heads to Portland to face Multnomah at 2 p.m. on Saturday, before facing the University of Oregon in a Sunday exhibition game at 2 p.m. more
