Gauchos Offense Shines in Exhibition Opener Against Westmont
Since the 2014 season, the UCSB women’s soccer team has begun its season the same way: an exhibition match against Westmont College. Much like the past few years, the Gauchos defeated the Warriors but Saturday’s victory might have been the most dominant of them all.
UCSB took down Westmont by a final tally of 5-1 thanks to a strong first-half performance that saw the Gauchos score four goals to the Warriors one. more
Westmont Warriors Take Their Lumps in Exhibition Loss
It was a tough opening half for the Warriors at Harder Stadium on Saturday night as Westmont Women’s Soccer took on the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara in this year’s edition of the annual crosstown exhibition game. The Warriors gave up four goals in the opening frame and fell by a final score of 5-1.
Westmont’s goal came in the 38th minute afterMaddi Berthoud drew a foul that resulted in a yellow card being issued to UC Santa Barbara’s Amaya Zabalza. Payton Wolf took the resulting free kick from 25 yards out on the right side directing, the ball to the front of the Gaucho net. more

‘Hometown Hero’ fights cancer with community support Bothell firefighter, volunteer and “rad dad” Kirk Robinson is battling metastatic melanoma.
Kirk Robinson’s Facebook feed is full of uplifting content: photos of his firefighting career, videos of his two boys skateboarding and boating, inspirational news stories, family selfies and “throwback” memes. There is so much negativity in the world, he said, and he likes to share the good things. But at the beginning of the summer, he decided to post something more personal, and less positive: that he’s been fighting cancer for the past year and a half. … Robinson went to Westmont College and studied kinesiology and sports medicine. His decision to become a firefighter surprised almost no one, as Robinson was always known as a “problem solver and a helper.” He joined Mercer Island’s auxiliary firefighting force in 1999, and was hired full-time at the Bothell Fire Department in April 2001. He also served as an EMT in Mercer Island’s Marine Patrol. more
Martin Garber Obituary
Rev. Martin M. Garber of Grace Village Retirement Community of Winona Lake, Indiana passed away at 5:26 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at Kosciusko Community Hospital of Warsaw at the age of 93.
He was born on June 14, 1925 in Ripon, California to Alma (Cover) Garber and George Garber. On October 18, 1946 he was married to Beverly Jean (Wooley) Garber, who survives.
Martin proudly served as a medic in the U.S. Army during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. He graduated from Westmont College in California and Grace Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana. more
