Westmont’s baseball team opened a three-game series against Golden State Athletic Conference rival Vanguard with a 5-2 win in Costa Mesa on Friday. Warrior junior right-hander Grant Gardner seven-2/3 innings for the win, retiring the first 11 Lion batters and ended allowing two runs on six hits. Lance Simpson pitched 11/3 innings giving up one hit and no runs for the save. more

Freshman Taylor Cheung-Damonte was named the Golden State Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday. The honor, according to a release sent out by Westmont, covered matches from March 1 through March 18. more

Minor mudslides affect South Coast highways

The California Highway Patrol reported that mud and debris were covering the #3 lane of northbound Highway 101 at Padre Juan Canyon, which is near Faria Beach in northern Ventura County. … The Carpinteria Unified School District and Westmont College have canceled classes for the Day. Cold Spring School will hold classes at an alternate site in Goleta and Montecito Union School will hold classes at alternate sites in the Hope School District. more

Lauren McCoy was unable to make it to Monday’s meeting of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table to pick up her Female Athlete of the Week award, but for good reason. She was getting a head start on trying to earn next week’s award, and in the process pushing the Westmont women’s basketball team into the NAIA national championship game for the second time in six years. more
