University Will Offer Travel Reimbursement as Highway 101 Remains Closed

Access to the northbound portion of the U.S. Route 101 will remain closed from Oxnard to Santa Barbara until further notice, the California Department of Transportation District 5 announced early Monday afternoon. … Westmont College canceled classes from Jan. 6 through Jan. 12. Small Cold Spring School Suffers Huge Loss with Deaths of 2 Students in Montecito Flooding

A kindergarten and sixth-grade student at Cold Spring School were among the Montecito residents killed in Tuesday’s massive mudslides and flooding. … Westmont College, at 955 La Paz Road, was undamaged in the storm but evacuated Wednesday since it had no water service and its students live on campus. On a day of upsets in the Golden State Athletic Conference, NAIA 14th-ranked Westmont suffered a 70-69 road loss to Arizona Christian. The Warriors (10-5, 3-1 GSAC) led by seven at the half, but were outscored 24-15 in the third quarter and would make up only one of those points in the final frame. more

Mudslides bury Montecito and leave 17 dead

Officials warned residents in mandatory evacuation zones for the Montecito and Summerland mudslides that rescue and repair efforts could take up to two weeks. … Water quality in the area served by the Montecito Water District was so severely compromised that residents were ordered to boil water before using it. The inability to supply potable water was a key factor that triggered the evacuation of the Westmont College campus. more

Many people who were given mandatory evacuation orders in Montecito before Tuesday’s deadly storm didn’t leave their homes, and as of Thursday there were still reports of those who chose to stay in their residences – without utilities or road access – when approached by rescue crews. … “It’s the only experience I’ve ever had in my life when you were really unsure about what your future might hold,” said Tom Walters, a kinesiology professor at Westmont College. more
