Lipman retires after 10 years leading Camarillo High

With mixed emotions, Glenn Lipman watched the members of Adolfo Camarillo High School’s Class of 2015 receive their diplomas Tuesday afternoon. …Lipman, who began his 37- year career as a teacher at his alma mater, Royal High School in Simi Valley, earned his bachelor’s degree from Westmont College and his master’s in administration from Azusa Pacific University. more

Surfer takes billboards from freeways to ocean

It’s his love of the ocean that makes him—and most surfers— so committed to keeping the water blue and the beaches clean, Avedissian said, and what inspired him to create an ecologically friendly company.

Avedissian traveled abroad regularly while he was a business student at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.

And it was during those travels that he thought of the idea for his company—Rareform—which uses recycled billboard material to make surfboard bags. more

RMHS students qualify for National Chemistry Olympiad test

Students Greg Schein and Evan Crook used the change to build a battery as part of the 2011 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad test, a multitiered competition that brings together the world’s brightest high school chemistry students to test their skill.

The test was last Saturday at Westmont College, and seven people from Ventura County to San Luis Obispo County qualified to take it. more

Competition open to artists

Buenaventura Art Association announces a call for entries for its 25th annual Open Competition at the Buenaventura Gallery, 700 E. Santa Clara St., Ventura. … John Carlander, art professor at Westmont College is the juror. He was a graduate assistant and teaching fellow at Bowling Green State University, where he earned an MFA. He taught at Ashland University (Ohio), Concordia College (Minnesota), and Augustana College (SD) before coming to Westmont. more

Red Cross names new staff

Ava Avedissian was hired as the new emergency services coordinator. Avedissian will assist in emergency management, disaster planning and response, and will support the overall efforts of the Emergency Services Department.

Avedissian assisted in the Tea Fire in Santa Barbara, the Jesusita Fire and the Haiti earthquake. She is a graduate of Westmont College, where she helped to revise, train and implement emergency plans. more

Eagle Scout earns scholarship

Eagle Scout William Johnston Allison will receive one of four $20,000 Mabel and Lawrence S. Cooke Eagle Scout scholarships.

The endowment provides a maximum grant of $20,000 and pays up to $5,000 per year for four years.

Allison plans to attend Westmont College. more

Willis has taught at Westmont College since 1988. He has published poems in journals such as “Poetry,” “Ascent, Askew,” “Wilderness” and “Christian Century.” more
