Hope lands part of $1.2 million grant for neutron detector project

With a namesake nod to a Renaissance painting by a famous artist-inventor, a major new equipment grant to Hope College will enable a new generation of student researchers to make cutting-edge discoveries themselves. Hope is the lead institution of a nine-school consortium that is sharing $1.2 million from the National Science Foundation — of which Hope gets $203,894 — to build a new “large-area multi-institutional Scintillator Array” (LISA), a neutron detector that will be used in the study of exotic nuclei. … The NSF grant for LISA has been funded through the federal economic stimulus package.  In addition to Hope, the schools participating in the LISA consortium are Central Michigan University, Concordia College, Gettysburg College, Indiana University South Bend, Ohio Wesleyan, Rhodes College, Wabash College and Westmont College. more
