Kyle Scalmanini… The 6-foot-2 point guard and team captain came up huge for the Wolfpack in a 66-56 upset of Palomares League front-runner Bonita with 17 points, eight assists, four rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Later in the week, Claremont registered a 64-48 win over Ayala with Scalmanini chalking up eight points, nine rebounds, five assists and a steal. This season, Scalmanini, who has signed with Westmont College, is averaging 17 points, 4 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 steals. more

Community Christian College holds 2016 graduation ceremony

Community Christian College, a Redlands-based independent two-year Christian college, held its 17th commencement June 18 at its Redlands campus, 1849 Wabash Ave. The eight graduates receiving associate degrees were Andrea Espinosa, Daisy Gonzales, Lorissa Lopez, Sicily Martinez, Jared Rhodes, Adam Rincon, Kenia Rubalcava and Serena Shumate. … All eight graduates will continue their education at four-year Christian colleges — Biola University, California Baptist University, Westmont College and Liberty University. more

Slain UCLA professor William Klug a devout Christian, father of 2, beloved Little League coach

A UCLA professor slain in his office was remembered Thursday as an educator who was passionate about learning, challenged his engineering students and mentored Little Leaguers in his El Segundo neighborhood. …Klug graduated in 1997 from Westmont College, a Christian liberal arts college in Montecito near Santa Barbara, with a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics. He earned a master’s degree at UCLA and a doctorate at Caltech in Pasadena in 2003, and was hired to work that year at UCLA’s Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. more

Redlands Opera talks past, future

The Redlands Opera Theatre will present “Songs of the Eventide” at the Mission Gables Bowl House, Saturday at 7 p.m. …Stage director and company founder, Christina Jensen, who’s been with the theater for almost a year and a half, and now serves as the resident director, went to Westmont College in Santa Barbara for her undergraduate degree, and then earned her graduate degree from Harvard. She then returned to Redlands, her home town, and founded the Redlands Opera Theatre. more

Violinist Christina, cellist Seana Thompson play Celtic and American folk music for Spinet in Redlands

Elected to active membership were Christina Jensen, who majored in music and arts criticism at Westmont College, won their concerto competition for three years as soprano soloist and received her master’s degree in fine arts from Harvard University; and Brian Jensen, who holds a Master of Fine arts degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and has sung baritone roles in numerous operas and operettas. more
