From Bach to bluegrass, violin maker is hailed

Santa Barbara master violin maker James Wimmer will be honored at Wimmerata, a festival of two concerts featuring musicians from throughout California playing his instruments on Sunday, Sept. 7, at Trinity Episcopal Church. Westmont College has commissioned Mr. Wimmer to make the instruments, which will be be used by generations of Westmont students and faculty during the school year and loaned to the Music Academy of the West for their summer programs. more

Westmont welcomes incoming students

The 333 members of the class of 2012 arrive at Westmont this week for new student orientation, beginning today and running through Sunday. Parent orientation programs take place today and Friday. School begins on Monday, Labor Day. more

Lawson equalizer gives Westmont tie on road

Westmont volleyball begins season in Oregon

Westmont women’s volleyball head coach Jim Smoot offered up a couple of neutral observations following the conclusion of his team’s 2-2 performance at the Holiday Inn Express Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho. But in the end, he didn’t hide his ultimate desire. more

UCSB and Westmont College have been recognized in U.S. News and World Report’s annual rankings of colleges. UCSB was ranked 12th among the magazine’s “Top 50 Public National Universities” and 44th on its list of “Best National Universities.” Westmont College, meanwhile, ranked in a four-way tie at No. 111 in the list of the nation’s 265 liberal arts colleges. more

Lack of financial aid hasn't hampered local enrollments – Counselors advise students how to get loans, grants

While college financial aid officials agree it’s never a positive sign when a private lender gets out of the student loan business, it’s too early to tell whether this situation will worsen to the point where it affects South Coast students in large numbers this semester and beyond. At Westmont College, where annual tuition, fees, room and board cost $43,000, Diane Horvath, director of financial aid, said students for the upcoming academic year have not experienced an inability to obtain funding through alternative or private loans. Ms. Horvath said all students have been able to secure Stafford loans as well as parent and private loans. more

Rouse named Westmont director of alumni and parent relations

Teri Bradford Rouse, executive director of the Channel Islands YMCA Youth and Family Services branch, has been named senior director of alumni and parent relations at Westmont College. Ms. Rouse, who previously served as executive director of Life Network Pregnancy Care Center, will replace Mary Given, who accepted the position of associate vice president of alumni and church relations at Fuller Theological Seminary. more
