The Lab breaks new ground in health of athletes

Dave Odell is a man who wears many different types of running shoes (hats): Husband, father, businessman, Westmont College athletic director and, until recently, San Marcos High boys basketball coach. The one thing you wouldn’t normally associate him with is a revolution. But in a way, Odell may be on the verge of a few different things that could change not only fitness, but wellness, serious disease and possibly an alternative fuel source. I only half-jokingly asked recently if he ever slept. He just laughed while sitting in The Lab-a center that he owns with John Tynan, Mike Swan, proprietor and physical therapist of Elite Performance and Rehab, and Dr. Marcus Elliott of the Peak Performance Project (P3). more


This summer, 70 Westmont College students, some of whom are pictured at right, will serve in 13 countries in the student-led, staff-directed Emmaus Road program. The program, in its 16th year, sponsors activities that increase awareness of global concerns, broadening the worldview of students and promoting the value of diversity, according to a news release. more

ORSO, Nancy Jean

On April 18, 2014, Nancy Jean Orso of Goleta died peacefully at home at the age of 79, stepping into eternity to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ face to face in the indescribable glory of heaven.

Nancy was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 24, 1934 to the late Donald and Florence McGee. Nancy spent her early years at local schools in Chicago until her family headed west to Santa Barbara when she was 14 years old. Nancy attended Santa Barbara High School, graduating in the class of 1952. She went on to attend Westmont College, and over the next 49 years was employed as a technical executive secretary at Aero Physics, Curtis Wright, General Electric, General Research International, and AT&T. more

When their classmates took to the commencement stage at Westmont’s Russell Carr Field on Saturday, the baseball team was busy claiming the Golden State Athletic Conference tournament crown in El Cajon. It was tough for the nine graduating seniors to miss one of the most iconic moments of their college careers, but the sacrifice was made willingly by the Warriors. more

Artist’s work focus of discussion

SOLVANG – The inspiration and talent of the late artist Channing Peake will be discussed Saturday at the Elverhoj Museum of History and Art in Solvang. … Tony Askew, professor emeritus of Westmont College, and Cheri Peake, the artist’s widow, will give their own perspectives of his work. Mr. Askew is expected to discuss Mr. Peake’s methods, materials, composition and use of color while Mrs. Peake will share her knowledge of her late husband’s inspirations, using personal stories. more

Westmont graduates more than 350

At Westmont College”s Russell Carr Field on Saturday, 367 members of the Class of 2014 made their way to the podium to receive their diplomas and head out into the world while friends and family cheered. The Christian college”s commencement featured choirs, awards, tributes to faculty both living and dead, and a rousing commencement speech by Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church. more
