New student trustee joins school board: NIPOMO HIGH GRADUATE HAS STUDIED FOR NEW ROLE

Lauren Kueffler, a Nipomo High School graduate and Hancock College student, recited an oath of office Tuesday that made official her election to the Hancock College school board as the new student trustee. … The Hancock student body later elected Kueffler to replace Steven Auclair, the former student trustee, in a spring campaign. … Auclair graduated from Hancock in May and will study political science at Westmont College, a liberal arts college in Santa Barbara this fall. He said the student trustee position is a unique role that combines the responsibilities of being a trustee and representing both current and future Hancock attendees. more

Colin Powell to speak at Westmont College: EVENT SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 1 IN SB

Retired Gen. Colin Powell, a groundbreaking former U.S. Secretary of State, has been announced as the keynote speaker at the eighth annual Westmont College President’s Breakfast. The event is scheduled from 7 to 9 a.m. Friday, March 1, in the Grand Ballroom of Fess Parker’s DoubleTree Resort in Santa Barbara. Tickets, $125 per person, go on sale Friday, Feb. 1, at 9 a.m. at www.westmont.edu. Seating is limited and tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, the college said. more

Hundreds of teens join to sing in SB

About 300 high school singers will join the Westmont College Choir and perform at the 8th annual Westmont Fall Choral Festival at 3:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at First United Methodist Church, 305 East Anapamu St. and 6 p.m. at First Presbyterian, 21 E. Constance Ave. Both Santa Barbara performances are free and open to the public. The afternoon performance features Oaks Christian Advanced Women’s Chorus (Westlake Village), Highland High School Chamber Choir (Bakersfield), San Marcos High School Madrigal Singers and A Cappella Choir (Santa Barbara), Santa Susana Vocal Ensemble (Simi Valley), Frontier High School Concert Choir (Bakersfield), Westmont New Sounds and the Santa Barbara Quire of Voyces. more

North County supervisor candidates to meet in SM forum

In what is shaping up to be a political game of musical chairs, five candidates vying for two North County seats on the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors will gather Tuesday for a forum in Santa Maria to answer questions and discuss issues. … Third District Supervisor Doreen Farr, and 4th District Supervisor Joni Gray represent a large portion of the North County including the Santa Maria, Lompoc and Santa Ynez valleys. … Farr had wide-ranging business experience prior to joining the Board of Supervisors. She is co-owner of the Goleta Valley Voice newspaper, she has also served as a partner in a pair of local radio stations and Victoria Street Theater. Farr also worked as a financial aid counselor at Westmont College and a planning consultant for the city of Goleta. more

Jupiter to be ‘star’ of show at Westmont

The giant, gaseous planet Jupiter will be the focus of attention for stargazers at a free public viewing with the powerful Keck Telescope on the Montecito campus of Westmont College starting about 7 p.m. today. Westmont physics instructor Thomas Whittemore says Jupiter will be high in the sky with its Great Red Spot in view, and “if conditions are good, we may be able to get a glimpse of this cloud storm on Jupiter’s surface,” he added. more

At a Bach concert – As a special Mother’s Day treat, West Coast Chamber Orchestra celebrates its 30th anniversary with All Bach concerts Sunday at the Presidio Chapel. Guest Conductor Dr. Michael Shasberger, from Westmont College, directs a lovely program including the Triple Violin Concerto. This glorious work was “reverse-engineered” from harpsichord arrangements made during Bach’s time from the original, now lost, concerto. more

 

Panthers on the move

It was another proud day for athletic director Rhett Carter and the rest of Pioneer Valley High School. Thursday afternoon, two more student-athletes announced where they were going to continue not only their athletic careers but their academic careers…San Diego Christian is a member of the NAIA Division I, Golden State Conference, which features Vanguard, Biola, Westmont, Fresno Pacific, Concordia and Azusa Pacific, schools that have over the years recruited athletes from the Central Coast. more
