Obituary of Steven Robert Jackson

Steven Robert Jackson went to be with the Lord on July 8, 2017, following a courageous three-year battle with brain cancer. A private celebration of life will be held in the fall. … He was born on February 17, 1957 in Sacramento to Harry and Lorna Jackson. He grew up in Burbank and graduated from Westmont College in Santa Barbara in 1979. He spent most of his career working in information technology, retiring from 20 years with the Sacramento Police Department in 2015. He loved cycling, running and doing anything outdoors with his family. more

Free Valentine’s Day concert in Nevada City

Sierra Presbyterian Church will be hosting a free concert by the Westmont College Orchestra at 2 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. The 60-member orchestra, under the direction of Michael Shasberger, will perform Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy Overture,” “Music for Shakespeare” by Edward Green and “At Shakespeare’s Tomb” by Emily Rutherford. Six members of the Westmont Chapel Band will perform select pieces. more

Forest Lake Christian athletes sign National Letters of Intent

Three of the most decorated athletes Forest Lake Christian has had in recent years were the center of attention Tuesday as Kyle Soria, Lauren Piner and Christian Dethlefs signed their National Letters of Intent for their respective colleges in front of a packed gym of fellow students, parents, educators and coaches.

Soria, a three-sport athlete, and Dethlefs both signed to attend and play at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. Dethlefs will play basketball for the Warriors, and Soria will play baseball. more

Westmont College Orchestra performs in GV

St. Joseph’s Cultural Center presents the Westmont College Orchestra at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Westmont College Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Michael Shasberger, performs original literature, transcriptions, and arrangements. Included in this are works for full orchestra, string orchestra and small ensembles. more

Alumni Receives Master's Degree

Jayme Nichole Poppin, who studied physics at Westmont for two years before transferring to Florida Tech, received her master’s degree in space systems from Florida Institute of Technology on May 3. more
