Rochester Ridgemen starts summer season slow

The Rochester Ridgeman took their first two games at home after sweeping a doubleheader against the Wellsville Nitros. After that, it was rough sailing as the Ridgemen could only take one of their next four games to finish the week below the .500 mark at 3-4. …After walking the bases loaded in the first inning, he would run into no more trouble, striking out 11 batters as Shane Soria of Westmont College’s first-inning run would hold up in the victory. more

Dr. Gayle D. Beebe Westmont College President to be Keynote Speaker of Maranatha High School’s Commencement 2015

The culminating activity of Maranatha High School’s Senior Class will occur on Saturday, May 30 as it celebrates the Class of 2015 with its 50th Year Commencement Ceremony at Lake Avenue Church. Over 2,000 proud parents, family members, and friends will be in attendance to witness this special event to commemorate the Senior Class.

At commencement, awards will be given to students honoring their academic excellence, athletic achievements, and Christian character. In addition, attendees will hear from the Class of 2015 Co-Valedictorians Joe Laski and Devin Robledo. Our Headmaster Dr. Gyertson will address the graduates, and Maranatha is honored to have Dr. Gayle D. Beebe (shown right), the president of Westmont College as the keynote speaker. more

Dalton State (Ga.) College wins NAIA DI championship

Just two years ago, Dalton State couldn’t even dream about winning a men’s basketball national championship. …Jordan Bowling had 18 points and seven rebounds, Anthony Hilliard added 14 points and Dalton State (Ga.) College cruised to a 71-53 victory over Westmont (Calif.) College in the NAIA national championship game on Tuesday. more

John Mayer and Patrick McAfee, recently completed various training programs, spread over the course of three months, in preparation for their final destination: assignments with the Navy. The new assignments are part of the dual-service exchange program between the Air Force and Navy, dubbed Striker Trident by Air Force Global Strike Command. … McAfee graduated from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, and Mayer is an alumni of Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. more

Dr Xaba cruelly retired by death

“THERE was a time when Dr Xaba approached me indicating that he wanted to retire from the Exams Council, but because of his rich leadership and experience, we persuaded him to stay on, which he did as he continued to serve only to be retired by this death,” said Ministry of Education Principal Secretary Pat Muir. Muir explained how exams council chairman Dr Busa Xaba was a valuable asset not just to the council but to the ministry as a whole. The PS was addressing mourners during the funeral of Dr Xaba on Saturday at his home in Mhlosheni. …  He completed his formative education at Franson Christian Primary and High School, Mhlosheni. Considering his exceptional educational performance, he received a full scholarship to enrol at Westmont College in California. more

Eagles look forward to GSAC tournament

The Eagles’ momentum builds as they prepare to take on the postseason that will commence after their final game at William Jessup University on Saturday, Nov. 1. In the previous matchup between the Warriors and the Eagles, Biola dominated the game, winning 4-1. After two games in early October resulting in a tie, the Eagles were thrilled with their win against San Diego Christian College at home on Oct. 22….The game against Westmont College, who is currently ranked one place above Biola at fourth in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings, followed the game against San Diego Christian. more
