Santiam Christian grad ninth in javelin at NAIA nationals

Santiam Christian High graduate Joseph Miller completed his collegiate athletic career with a ninth-place finish at last month’s NAIA outdoor track and field national championships in Gulf Coast, Alabama. Miller, a senior at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, had a best mark of 183 feet, 7 inches at nationals. He set a personal best of 193-8 earlier in the season. more


The Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art features the works of more than two dozen artists who have ties to the Santa Barbara community in How Modernism Came to Santa Barbara: 1945-1990, July 6-Aug. 5. There will be a free, public opening reception 4-6 p.m. Thursday, July 6, at the museum, 955 La Paz Road. The artists, many of whom still live locally, have served as art faculty at UCSB, Westmont and Santa Barbara City College. more


Christopher O’Connor, a 30-year resident and longtime local banker, has joined the Westmont Foundation, which cultivates ties between Westmont College and the community.

O’Connor, a wealth adviser of The Private Bank at Union Bank, began his career in 1991 with Santa Barbara Bank & Trust. Since then he has worked with many Westmont alumni as colleagues or clients. more

Ridgemen earn first home win in doubleheader split

The Rochester Ridgemen and Wellsville Nitros faced off in New York Collegiate Baseball League action Thursday at Basket Road Field, splitting a doubleheader with the Nitros taking game one 5-4 and the Ridgemen claiming game two 13-3. … This allowed sophomore Andrew Bayard (Westmont College) to step up and double home Sabino for the first run of the game. Bayard later came around to score on a single for senior Casey Claflin (Shawnee State University). more

View Jupiter Rising Tonight

The observatory at Westmont College hosts the Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit’s possible final summer viewing of Jupiter rising in the evening sky Friday, June 16. The telescope is made available every third Friday of the month, and tonight’s sky views — starting at 8 p.m. — should include a glimpse of the Cassini Division that separates the rings of Saturn. The planet is currently heavily tilted in its alignment with Earth. more

Littleton residents announce engagement of daughter

Darrelle Leraan Good, daughter of Andrea Brown and Jeffrey Good, of Littleton, and Scott Michael Fricke, son of Karen Fricke and the late David Fricke, of Grand Junction, Colorado, will marry on July 14 at Strawberry Creek Ranch in Granby, Colorado. The bride attended high school at Heritage High School, graduating in 2007. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in religious studies and philosophy from Westmont College in 2011, and went on to earn a Master of Arts in clinical mental health from Denver Seminary in 2016. more
